(Dan Tri) - Thanks to a big catch of herring, after a day at sea, fishermen in Quang Binh can earn millions.
Early morning at Hai Ninh commune beach, Quang Ninh district (Quang Binh) becomes bustling with the sight of fishing boats coming and going. On the shore, traders are ready with styrofoam boxes and plastic baskets to buy herring.
Fisherman Nguyen Xuan Can (55 years old), and his crew returned after 5 hours at sea with bright smiles. Although the herring yield this time was less than previous trips, Mr. Can still caught nearly a quintal of herring.
According to Mr. Can, fishermen usually go out to sea at 3am and return at 8-9am to sell fish to traders. For over a week, fishermen in Hai Ninh commune have been continuously catching a lot of herring, with a yield of 50-70kg, some boats even catch hundreds of kilograms of herring.
Herrings often gather in large schools, so if they are caught in the right direction, fishermen can catch a lot. The fishing grounds are 5-6 nautical miles from shore, and each trip only requires 2-3 workers per boat.
Every day, Hai Ninh fishermen's boats go out to sea twice, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, each trip lasting 4-5 hours. With herring prices at 15,000-30,000 VND/kg, fishermen can earn millions of VND each day.
"My fellow fishermen and I are old and catch less, but young fishermen can pull in nearly half a ton of fish a day, earning nearly ten million dong," Mr. Can shared.
Fishermen in the coastal areas of Quang Binh said that although the seafaring profession is hard, when the seafood season is good, such as herring, squid, sea bream or anchovy, they can make a living and continue to stay at sea to make a living.
"Some days when fishing is profitable, we earn millions, but there are also days when we don't have enough money for fuel. If we catch a lot of herring like we did recently, even if we go less, we can still earn 30-40 million VND/month," said Hai, another fisherman.
To reduce time and effort, fishermen in Hai Ninh commune have rented tractors to bring their boats down to sea and ashore, instead of having to mobilize many people to push the boats like before.
Mr. Pham Van Lieu, Chairman of Hai Ninh Commune People's Committee, said that the locality has about 850 bamboo boats fishing near the shore. Although the capacity is small, at the beginning of the year, fishermen often catch a large amount of herring, bringing an exciting atmosphere and significant income.
"The herring season lasts until the end of April, fishermen are actively staying at sea to earn high income. We encourage people to take advantage of the fishing season to develop the economy," said Mr. Lieu.
Herring is a popular seafood, favored by people and restaurants to prepare many delicious and nutritious dishes.
