Focus on key markets

Con Nhan Xu Restaurant Company Limited (Cam Thanh Commune, Hoi An City) has just connected with 2 partners in Melbourne City (Australia) during the event introducing Quang Nam tourism in Australia that took place last month.

Although only at the stage of signing the memorandum of understanding, this is the beginning of a long-term cooperation process between the Australian tourist market and the destination of Hoi An as well as Quang Nam.

“We introduce to our partners some local experience products combined with cuisine such as participating in cycling activities through Tra Que vegetable village, riding buffalo in Cam Thanh field, rowing a basket boat in Bay Mau coconut forest and resting for foot massage, learning to cook at the restaurant” – representative of Con Nhan company listed the product services.

In recent years, Australian tourists have always been in the top 3 key international tourist markets of Quang Nam tourism. Most recently, in 2023, Quang Nam welcomed 104,000 Australian visitors for sightseeing and accommodation, and in the first 9 months of 2024 alone, more than 110,000 Australian visitors chose Quang Nam as a tourist destination (exceeding the whole of 2023).

Mr. Nguyen Trong Tuan - Director of Hoi An DMC Tourism Company Limited acknowledged that compared to European and North American tourist markets, the growth rate of Australian tourists is quite fast and sustainable.

“Australian tourists are interested in cultural tourism, golf, eco-tourism, and green tourism. Meanwhile, Quang Nam has advantages such as owning 2 world cultural heritages, international standard golf courses, diverse cuisine... so it is convenient to attract this tourist market,” Mr. Tuan analyzed.

Besides the strong growth of Australian visitors, since the beginning of the year, Taiwanese visitors have also been considered a spectacular breakthrough in the Asian tourist market, with continuous growth every month.

With cultural similarities, Taiwanese visitors easily adapt to Quang Nam tourism products and services. Currently, Quang Nam welcomed nearly 218 thousand Taiwanese visitors in the first 9 months of 2024 (ranking 2nd and accounting for nearly 15% of the proportion of international visitors to Quang Nam).

Diversified customer market

Through the first 9 months of 2024, Quang Nam welcomed about 6.475 million visitors and stays (up 6% over the same period), of which international visitors are estimated at 4.245 million (up 8% over the same period in 2023), domestic visitors are estimated at 2.23 million, up 3% over the same period in 2023. It is easy to see that the increase in visitors from some key markets such as Korea, Australia, Taiwan... has contributed significantly to the increase in the total number of international visitors and stays in Quang Nam.

Choosing key markets for promotion will help Quang Nam tourism maintain its growth momentum. Photo: VL

Mr. Phan Van Tu - Director of Quang Nam Tourism Information and Promotion Center (Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism) shared that although Quang Nam still identifies Europe and America as traditional markets, but in the current economic recession and instability in some European and Middle Eastern countries as well as the rather costly resources for promoting the European market... diversifying the tourist market, focusing on nearby tourists (Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and India) and other emerging markets will help Quang Nam tourism grow steadily.

“Of course, the development of the promotion program is based on many factors such as the Resolution of the Provincial Party Committee, the Plan of the Provincial People's Committee, the plan of the joint group of 5 Central localities (Quang Nam, Da Nang, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Binh), including the actual situation and the orientation of the tourism promotion plan of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism... aiming to promote the image of Quang Nam destination most effectively" - Mr. Tu said.

The 9-month visitor data report of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024 shows that the 5 traditional European countries with the highest number of visitors to Quang Nam only reached more than 306,470. With North America at about 92,000 visitors (USA: 68,424; Canada: 23,239), the number is even more modest. This shows that the markets considered traditional account for an insignificant proportion of the total structure of international visitors to Quang Nam.

This is understandable due to the long distance and the impact of economic recession and war, which causes high costs (roundabout flights), leading to limited ability to travel to Asian countries and Vietnam. However, this does not mean that the traditional European and American tourist market is less important, in return, the ability of this type of tourist to stay is mostly long-term and high-spending.

Mr. Phan Van Tu said that in 2025, in addition to focusing mainly on key markets (Northeast Asia and ASEAN), Quang Nam will also cooperate with the Central region's affiliated localities to target the European market (attending the ITB Germany tourism fair) to promote the recovery of traditional tourist markets, especially in the face of the risk that Korean tourists are shifting elsewhere.
