Geographical location and origin of the name of the cave
Nguom Ngao Cave is also known as Ngao Cave. It was discovered in 1921 and opened for tourism in 1996. This majestic cave is hidden in the heart of a mountain in Gun village, Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province. According to a survey by the British Royal Cave Association in 1995, the cave is 2144m long. With 3 main entrances: Nguom Lom, Nguom Ngao and Ban Thuon.
The cave has a unique name, Nguom Ngao. It is a local name in the Tay language and contains a fascinating story. Nguom Ngao in the Tay language means “tiger cave”. In which, “Nguom” means cave, “Ngao” is the cry or also means tiger. There are currently two different explanations for the name of the cave.
Legend has it that in the past, there were many fierce tigers living in the cave, they often went to the surrounding villages to catch the local people's livestock. The people set traps to catch all the tigers and from then on they lived in peace. Therefore, the Tay people named the cave Nguom Ngao. Besides, there is also a legend that the name Nguom Ngao comes from the roaring sounds made by the sound of the stream flowing in the cave, which sounded like the roar of a fierce tiger.
Unique landscape inside Nguom Ngao cave
Entering Nguom Ngao Cave, you will see "works of art" with many strange stalactites. Countless stalagmites grow from below. And stalactites from high stone arches hang down in many shapes, reflecting beautiful light. According to scientific documents, Nguom Ngao is a limestone cave formed about 400 million years ago. The stalactites in this cave have a different color compared to other caves due to the amount of calcium mixed with many impurities. Setting foot here, visitors will be overwhelmed by the vast space with magical and sparkling stalactites.
The deeper you go into the cave, the more you will be fascinated by the wonders that open up inside. The cave is divided into many corridors. Each place has many stalactites of all sizes. Columns, stone edges with many shapes. There are coral trees, ships, pythons, terraced fields... But the most prominent is the stalactite shaped like an upside-down lotus. Every time water from the petals drops down, it is very beautiful. There are small alleys that only one person can pass through, and there are sections where stalactites hang down from the ceiling to touch people's faces, forcing you to dodge when passing through.
Not only impressing with the beauty of stalactites, inside the cave there are also many small streams. The water flows murmuring, making a pleasant sound. Because of the stream, the air here is always cool. If you come here between May and September, visitors can travel by boat in the cave, which is very interesting.
