Major General Nguyen Xuan Thuy was the principal of the Military University of Culture and Arts, training many generations of military artists. He is currently Deputy Director of the Propaganda Department, General Department of Politics, Vietnam People's Army.

Originated from childhood gift

Born in the sunny and windy land of Duc Yen (Duc Tho town, Duc Tho district), musician Nguyen Xuan Thuy grew up in a family with no artistic tradition. His father was a Chemistry teacher, his mother was a Literature teacher. But few people know that it was musician Nguyen Xuan Thuy's father who laid the first bricks for the "soldier artist" to build a great love for music.

During a business trip abroad, his father brought home a record player. Every time Nguyen Xuan Thuy studied well and behaved well, his father played a music CD as a reward. “Perhaps that is why music came to me so naturally. It was like a gift from my father,” the musician recalled.

At the age of 10, while visiting musician Van Ky's house in Hanoi, the boy Nguyen Xuan Thuy was fascinated by the sound of the mandolin. When he showed his talent, his mother sent him back to the musician's house for a few months to learn the instrument and culture. Upon returning, Nguyen Xuan Thuy actively participated in activities at the Ten-le-man Children's Cultural House (now the Viet Duc Children's Cultural House) to nurture his passion for art.

In 1983, at the age of 13, Nguyen Xuan Thuy joined the army, became a cadet and majored in Violin at the Military Arts School (now the Military University of Culture and Arts). The years of studying and training in the military environment shaped the style and spirit of a "soldier artist". At the age of 20, he worked at the Military Region 4 Art Troupe and was then sent to study composition at the Conservatory of Music (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music).

Teaching is a profession, writing is a career

After graduating from the Conservatory, musician Xuan Thuy returned to the Military University of Culture and Arts and began his teaching career in 2001. During more than two decades of his career, musician Xuan Thuy has not only successfully trained many generations of students but also passed on his passion for the profession to his juniors. Many of his students have achieved great success and continued to develop their music and art careers.

Musician Xuan Thuy once shared that the thing that worries him most in teaching is how to help students maximize their abilities. According to him, each student has their own strengths and the important thing is to discover those strengths early.

In addition to his teaching career, Associate Professor Nguyen Xuan Thuy has also been tirelessly pursuing his creative career for over 30 years. He does not consider teaching and creative work as two separate jobs, but on the contrary, they complement each other.
