It's just a habit, no written requirement.

Checking old lessons is an activity in the teaching process of teachers and the form is built by the teacher, not always fixed in the class, then checking immediately in the form of oral test.

However, the habit of some teachers, as well as the mentality of many teachers, always think that if they do not check the old lesson, the students will not study. Therefore, many teachers still give oral tests before teaching new lessons, leading to pressure for students, sometimes even causing teachers to be upset because usually there are always students who do not know the lesson, even when called to answer the lesson many times, they still do not know it, do not study.

STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS AFRAID OF RETURN ESSAY AT THE BEGINNING OF LESSON

At the beginning of class, the teacher opened the personal score book, many students were nervous and afraid. Students sitting in the classroom watched the teacher's pen move down, move up and stop at where. If the students with the number at the top of the score book saw the teacher move the pen to the end of the book, they would breathe a sigh of relief. The teacher only needed to stop the pen at a certain point, and the students in that area would sometimes feel their hearts pounding.

Practice, experimentation, group work... are the methods teachers are currently using to assess and test students' knowledge and abilities.

High school students, whether good or bad, are afraid of oral tests at the beginning of class because they always feel pressured. Poor students are under pressure, but good students are also afraid because teachers usually do not only ask about the previous lesson content but also expand and improve it, especially for students with good or good academic performance.

Students are afraid that if teachers give them low marks and write comments on their exercise books or notes, they will be scolded by their parents. They are afraid that they will not be able to answer fluently in front of their friends. Therefore, whether they are good or not, when they stand on the podium to answer a question, most students often stammer "Sir, I am..., Miss, I am..." several times before they can finish answering.

In fact, when many students do not do well in their homework, teachers give them low marks or even curse them, which leads to a bad mood in class. Therefore, many teachers often flexibly check old lessons or get points in other ways.

TEST FOR STUDENTS TO BE CONFIDENT IN LEARNING

Currently, secondary and high schools are applying two documents to assess students' learning outcomes. Classes studying the 2006 Program (grades 9 and 12) will apply Circular No. 26/2020/TT-BGDDT dated August 26, 2020 amending and supplementing a number of articles of the regulations on assessment and classification of secondary and high school students issued together with Circular No. 58/2011/TT-BGDDT dated December 12, 2011 of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Classes currently teaching the 2018 Program (grades 6, 7, 8, 10, 11) will follow the instructions of Circular No. 22/2021/TT-BGDDT dated July 20, 2021. In these two documents, there is no document requiring teachers to check students' papers at the beginning of the lesson.

According to current guidelines, students have two types of test scores: regular and periodic. Periodic test scores have two columns of scores each semester: mid-term and final.

For regular test scores, it is instructed to "be carried out through: questions and answers, writing, presentations, practice, experiments, learning products" and the number of tests is specified. Subjects with 35 periods/school year will have 2 regular score columns; subjects with over 35 - 70 periods/school year will have 3 columns; subjects with over 70 periods/school year will have 4 regular score columns.

With this guide, teachers can test orally but can also test students in other forms such as "writing, presentation, practice, experiment, learning products", as long as there are enough columns of points. However, which form is implemented, the professional group must agree, have a specific plan and the teacher must implement it in his/her (personal) education plan.

With the goals of the 2018 Education Program, as well as the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training on testing and evaluating the current quality of learning, teachers also need to be flexible in the process of conducting regular tests on students. Testing old lessons can only be done for students who volunteer at the beginning of class, or teachers can integrate them into the process of teaching new lessons and then give scores to help students feel confident in their studies.

It's been a long time since I've had an oral test at the beginning of class.

The Circular of the Ministry of Education and Training on student assessment clearly states: Student assessment is a process, with encouragement and recognition of students' progress at certain stages of learning.

Doing this, I have rarely given oral tests at the beginning of class for a long time.

Instead of oral tests at the beginning of class, I integrate student assessment into many classroom activities: warm-up, forming new knowledge, practice and application. Students love to try new things, love to explore and discover interesting things, so organizing crossword puzzles, quizzes with prizes, lucky boxes... related to the lesson knowledge will attract students to participate much more enthusiastically than oral tests: the teacher asks questions, students answer the answers they have memorized.

In particular, I use good points to encourage and motivate students to speak up to build lessons, creating a lively and exciting learning atmosphere. Depending on the level of difficulty and ease of thinking, the number of good points will stimulate students to think, communicate, and debate. And I know many teachers are also applying the method of scoring good points to motivate students to study.
