Wonju Bangye-ri Ginko, an 800-year-old ginkgo tree located in Bangye-ri village, is entering its most beautiful time of the year, when the leaves turn yellow.
A large area under a ginkgo tree in Bangye-ri village, Wonju city, Gangwon province, about 130 km from Seoul, is covered with yellow leaves, creating a scene that many people consider "fairytale-like". When referring to this famous tree, people often call it "the most beautiful ginkgo tree in the world".

There are no restaurants around the area where the ginkgo tree lives, and the nearest convenience store is 1.5 km away. However, the beauty of the tree still attracts tourists flocking to it every autumn.
Travel photographer Seo Young Gil’s autumn photo of the ginkgo tree posted two weeks ago has received more than 50,000 likes on Instagram. “Beautiful,” “spectacular,” and “stunning” are the words most often used to describe the tree.
Chae Beom-sik, head of Bangye-ri village, told the Korea JoonAng Daily in 2021 that an average of 4,000 visitors visit the tree every day, whether it's weekdays or weekends.
According to Visit Korea, the website of the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), the tree is 33 meters tall, has a canopy of 37.5 meters, and has been protected by the government as a natural monument since January 31, 1965.

The website adds that according to legend, the tree was planted by Seongju Lee, who stopped here to drink water. After leaving, Lee left his staff stuck straight into the ground. The staff later grew into the ginkgo tree we know today. Another legend says that a white snake lived in the tree, which is why it grew so strong and large.
