Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been rising as both sides have issued tough statements following Pyongyang's response to leaflet-dropping drones invading the capital's skies.
The leaflets, published by KCNA, were said to have been captured from drones dropped in the North Korean capital Pyongyang. |
On October 14, Yonhap news agency quoted a statement from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) saying: "The North Korean military has carried out activities believed to be related to explosions on routes along the Gyeongui and Donghae lines."
The JCS is closely monitoring the above-mentioned movements, which are taking place north of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), and seeking safety measures for South Korean troops and citizens.
Previously, on October 9, the Korean People's Army (KPA) announced that it would cut off all roads and railways connecting to South Korea to build "solid defense structures" in response to military exercises between South Korea and the US.
The move comes as tensions between the two Koreas continue to rise dangerously.
Pyongyang recently accused Seoul of flying drones over the capital Pyongyang to drop propaganda leaflets filled with "garbage and provocative rumors".
North Korea warned that if any more drones were detected, it would be considered a "declaration of war."
Despite the South Korean military denying the accusation and speculation that a South Korean activist group carried out the attack, North Korea said Seoul was responsible.
On October 14, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that on the night of October 12 and early morning of October 13, the North Korean Ministry of National Defense announced that they had ordered eight artillery brigades to be on combat readiness and that the country's air defense forces needed to strengthen their mission of protecting the capital Pyongyang.
In response, on the same day, JCS spokesman Lee Seong-joon emphasized: "The South Korean military is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to respond to North Korea's provocations."
