An Overview of Sony's Upcoming Project Q Machine

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên31/05/2023

According to MakeUseOf , Sony is once again dipping its toes into the world of portable gaming, but not quite in the way fans expected. That means no PSP-Ultra or PS Vita 2-like handheld consoles.

But later this year, PlayStation gamers will be able to play all their favorite games anywhere, as long as they have a strong enough Wi-Fi connection.

Sony officially confirms Project Q

There have been rumors circulating the internet for some time now that Sony is working on a new handheld gaming device. And during the PlayStation Showcase event held on May 24, that rumor was officially confirmed by Sony.

Sony has officially confirmed the existence of Project Q.

Amidst a slew of big upcoming game announcements, CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the company is indeed working on a PlayStation portable gaming system called 'Project Q'. While not much has been shared about the new project, fans have been given some details about how the device might work.

How will Project Q work?

Project Q is a handheld portable gaming device with an 8-inch HD display. Designed to look like a split DualSense controller with a screen in the middle, this means gamers can experience games with the DualSense controller while they are away from the PS5.

Players will be able to play PlayStation games even when they are not near their console.

One of the main things to note about Project Q is that it doesn’t have physical games. Instead, Project Q will stream games from the PS5 via Remote Play. Remote Play is an app that allows players to access and play PS5 games on mobile devices over a Wi-Fi connection. So, Project Q is a device created by Sony to optimize the user’s mobile gaming experience.

Additionally, the fact that Project Q can only stream games that players have installed on their PS5 via Remote Play also means that gamers must ensure they have a strong and stable internet connection, as well as a PS5 to operate the device.

How is Project Q different from other handheld game consoles on the market?

First is the display, the Project Q's 8-inch screen is about an inch larger than some of the popular handheld consoles on the market like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.

Also, the fact that it only works on Remote Play is a notable issue with this device. Most cloud-based game streaming services will inevitably provide a weaker connection and lower quality than the experience streamed directly from a console. Remote Play is also available for free on mobile, which is also a plus as it can help players understand how the app works and how to set it up with their mobile device.

Project Q has a larger screen than many handheld game consoles today

Project Q's price hasn't been announced yet, but since Remote Play is completely free, the question is whether it's worth spending money on a new device when you can still play PS5 games on your phone with the DualSense controller. There must be something important for Sony to launch Project Q, to replace and improve the mobile gaming experience for users. Let's see later this year.

Project Q Could Be the Beginning of Sony's Mobile Gaming Era

While there's no release date or pricing announced for Project Q yet, the idea of playing Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and the entire PS5 library from the comfort of your bed or on your patio is incredibly exciting.

And since PlayStation has been a huge success in the portable console market before, it's possible that Project Q could achieve even bigger and better things for Sony in the mobile gaming space in the future.
