A bluefin tuna sold for 114.24 million yen ($789,000) at the New Year's auction at Tokyo's largest fish market.
This is the fourth highest price for a tuna since the auction began in 1999, according to Kyodo News . 2024 is also the first year that the price of a tuna has exceeded 100 million yen.
The 238 kg bluefin tuna was caught off the coast of Oma, Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan. The buyers were wholesaler Yamayuki (Tokyo) and restaurant operator Ginza Onodera Sushi. The auction team has won the bid for four consecutive years.

The tuna meat will be sold by Yamayuki and Sushi Ginza Onodera at their Tokyo food stores. In light of the recent earthquake that struck earlier in the year, Yukitaka Yamaguchi said he had mixed feelings about whether to stop participating. "But we decided to participate with the belief that we also need positive news," he said.
The tuna auction is considered auspicious and has become a Japanese New Year tradition. The event takes place at the Toyosu fish market, one of Tokyo's most popular tourist attractions.
In the market’s auction history, the most expensive tuna weighed 278 kg and was sold in 2019 for 333.6 million yen, equivalent to more than 2.3 million USD. The price of the most expensive tuna bought last year was only one-third of this year’s price.
