According to the General Department of Customs, tuna exports in October increased by 22% over the same period last year, reaching nearly 93 million USD.
This is the first time in more than 2 years that the monthly export value of tuna has exceeded 90 million USD. In the first 10 months, the total export turnover reached more than 821 million USD, an increase of 18%.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), if this growth trend is maintained, the total export turnover of tuna this year is likely to reach 1 billion USD, an increase of 18% compared to last year.
In all markets, tuna exports to major markets increased in October, except for the EU and South Korea. The use of preferential tariff quotas and difficulties in implementing regulations related to combating IUU fishing hindered tuna exports to the EU in the last months of the year. Exports to this market fell by 15% in October, however, due to good growth in the first months of the year, tuna exports still increased by 17% in the first 10 months of the year.
In contrast, tuna exports to the US market, after slowing down in the third quarter, tended to accelerate again in the last months of the year. Increased demand for seafood during the year-end holidays, combined with the effects of the presidential election, boosted the country's tuna import demand. Tuna exports to the US increased by 30% in October.
Along with the US, the Middle East market is also increasing its tuna imports from Vietnam. Exports to this market are growing rapidly.
Notably, tuna exports to Japan have recovered in October. The value of tuna exports to this market in October increased by nearly 31% compared to the same period last year. The Japanese economic picture has brightened up a lot after many long months of gloom. Along with the economic recovery, the Japanese currency has strengthened significantly since September, increasing the demand for seafood imports from this market, including tuna.
