Candidate cities include Busan (South Korea), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and Rome (Italy).
Busan is ready
These days, Busan city is filled with banners and slogans promoting the effort to host World Expo 2030, a global event of great significance and impact as it brings together ideas, solutions, initiatives, achievements, etc. from countries around the world.
The five-yearly event, which South Korea has campaigned to host in 2030 with the theme "Changing our world, towards a better future", is scheduled to be held in Busan, the country's largest port city.
Having hosted a series of large-scale international events such as the 2002 World Cup, the 2002 Asian Games, the 2005 APEC Summit, the 2014 and 2019 ASEAN-Korea Special Summits, Busan is now ready to host the 2030 World Expo. According to the Expo 2030 Busan website, in addition to its extensive experience in organizing events, Busan is also well-positioned thanks to its development and favorable location.
In terms of development, Busan has played a key role in transforming Korea from an economic aid recipient to a donor in the space of half a century. Busan is now playing a leading role in the transformation process in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

On July 23, 2019, Busan was designated as a regulation-free zone for blockchain technology to test advanced technologies and promote related businesses.
As a hub for Korea's future industries, the smart city Busan Eco Delta is becoming the logistics hub of Northeast Asia. Busan is now a center for marine science, research, and development and is home to the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST).
Big "playground"
In the early stages, the World Expo was the place to launch new inventions such as telephones, cars, typewriters, televisions, elevators, etc. For example, inventor Alexander Graham Bell launched the telephone at the 1876 World Expo in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA), and inventor Philo Taylor Farnsworth launched television at the 1939 World Expo in New York (USA), according to The Diplomat .
According to the BIE, World Expos are international events that are unrivaled in scale, duration and visitor numbers. These events are large-scale educational and innovation platforms that act as a bridge between governments, companies, international organizations and citizens.
In terms of location, Busan is a transportation and logistics hub, connecting the Eurasian mainland with the Asia-Pacific, providing easy access to well-equipped infrastructure such as airports, high-speed rail and leading ports.
This city with seven beaches, rivers and mountains is vibrant and at the forefront of promoting Korean culture through a series of events such as the Busan International Film Festival, Busan One Asia festival and others.
Many benefits
According to Yonhap, local authorities estimate the Busan event will bring in economic benefits worth 47 billion USD (1,140 trillion VND). The event could attract more than 50 million visitors and create more than 500,000 jobs.
In addition, Korea has pledged to provide various forms of support to developing countries participating in the 2030 World Expo in Busan. Accordingly, partners can receive support in building booths, providing pre-event activities, supporting connection and communication activities, as well as expenses related to operations, travel, and accommodation. With many countries being partners and having many cooperative relationships with Korea, the opportunity from this country hosting the 2030 World Expo is worth looking forward to.

The main theme of the 2030 World Expo that Korea proposed to rally support for hosting the event is divided into sub-themes, addressing global challenges such as climate change, the dark side of digital transformation, and inequality within and between countries. Each sub-theme corresponds to the three pillars of the United Nations' sustainable development goals: people, planet, and prosperity.
While technological and economic development is seen as the path to a better and happier life, humanity is also facing unprecedented global challenges from the climate crisis, pandemics and the digital divide. “Therefore, drastic and fundamental change is needed to address them,” according to the South Korean Expo 2030 bid committee.
Long-standing event
Since the first World Expo took place in London in 1851, the idea has become popular and has been repeated around the world. Since the establishment of the International Exhibition Organization (BIE) in 1928 to manage and oversee these major events, World Expos have been organized around the theme of advancing human knowledge, taking into account human and social expectations, as well as highlighting scientific, technological, economic and social progress.
The most recent World Expo took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. The next World Expo will take place in Osaka, Japan, from April 13 to October 13, 2025.
