TPO - The dusty, bumpy roads of the past have now been paved with concrete or gravel, bringing remote villages in Lam Dong closer to the central area. The trade of goods helps develop the economy and improve the quality of life.

The road to remote areas of Gung Re commune is wider and more convenient.

Open the way for trucks to enter the fields

According to Mr. Trinh Van Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Gung Re commune (Di Linh district, Lam Dong), the commune has 6 villages with more than 1,640 households (nearly 7,000 people); of which ethnic minorities account for more than 45%, living mainly in 3 villages.

From 2021 to now, the commune has completed the construction of 19 roads to villages with a length of 6.8km; of which the State supported 4.9 billion VND, while the people contributed 5.8 billion VND and donated all the land that needed to be cleared to open the road.

In particular, the commune and villages have actively mobilized people to donate land and contribute the entire amount of up to 6.9 billion VND to open 5 roads to fields and production areas with a length of over 15km.

Up to now, all roads to villages and production areas of people in Gung Re commune have been widened and paved to make it possible for cars and motorbikes to travel.

Realizing the urgent need of people for coffee drying yards and playgrounds for children in remote areas, from 2022 to now, the commune has supported 41 poor households in 3 ethnic minority villages to build concrete yards and solid fences. The support level is 10 bags of cement for each household. With this support, households quickly bought sand and rocks and put effort into building the above works.

Hang Lang is a village with difficult economic conditions and a population of more than 1,750 people, but the people (mostly of the K'Ho ethnic group) are still very enthusiastic about donating land and contributing money to build roads.

Recently, when the commune announced the policy of building a 1km road across the land of 30 households, the people of Hang Lang village donated 100% of their land, assets, and crops on the land; and voluntarily contributed 30% of the total investment to build a road wide enough for cars to enter and exit to transport passengers and goods...

Mr. Pham Thanh Dong, Deputy Head of the Propaganda Department of Di Linh district, said that the motto of Di Linh district is to find every way to explain to people that donating land for road construction, although it causes initial damage to households, brings long-term benefits.

“Through the campaign to donate land for road construction, it shows that the decisive factor is the leadership role of the entire political system combined with village elders, religious dignitaries, and prestigious people. The promotion of propaganda and mobilization through many different forms and measures has changed people's thinking, making them fully aware of the purpose, meaning, and importance of donating land for road construction,” Mr. Dong shared.

Only 5% of households are poor

Open roads, spacious drying yards have changed the face of the countryside significantly, especially creating conditions for the effective implementation of new production models. Nowadays, along the wide concrete roads or gravel roads are coffee plantations and fruit-laden orchards.

Statistics from the People's Committee of Gung Re commune show that the locality has more than 4,000 hectares of agricultural land, including 1,600 hectares of coffee, more than 200 hectares of rice, hundreds of hectares of mulberry, fruit trees (avocado, durian, macadamia, passion fruit...) and many areas of various vegetables.

Thanks to the change in crop structure towards increasing the value of goods, introducing new varieties with high productivity and quality into cultivation; at the same time applying technical processes, crop productivity has increased. For example, after replanting, coffee productivity increased from 2-2.5 tons/ha to 3-3.5 tons/ha.

After replanting, coffee trees give higher yield and quality.

For remote villages, the commune organizes many training courses to guide them on how to do business, how to take care of crops and livestock, how to apply scientific and technical advances in production, and how to increase crop productivity; many poor households are assigned the task of managing and protecting forests to increase their income. The commune also encourages the development of forest-based tourism and community tourism associated with the cultural identity of the K'Ho people.

Thanks to that, the revenue per unit of cultivated area of the commune reached an average of nearly 150 million VND/ha/year, an increase of 30 million VND/ha compared to 2 years ago; income increased from 38 million VND (in 2021) to 48 million VND/person/year.

To date, the number of poor households has decreased to 82/1,640 households, accounting for 5%. From one of the most difficult communes of Di Linh district, Gung Re has been recognized as meeting new rural standards.
