Brazil fires coach Dorival Jr after 'embarrassing defeat' to Argentina - Photo: Reuters
The crushing defeat to arch-rivals Argentina enraged Brazilian fans and the press, who called it a “shameful defeat” or “humiliation,” and coach Dorival Jr., who was at the helm, was heavily criticized. He was eventually fired after just 14 months in charge of the Brazilian team.
Announcing its decision, the CBF said: "The Brazilian Football Confederation announces that coach Dorival Jr. is no longer in charge of the Brazilian national team. The management board thanks Dorival and wishes him success in his career... The CBF will quickly find his replacement."
Mr. Dorival was given the responsibility of leading the "Samba Dancers" after his success with Flamengo in 2022, where he won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Cup. However, the 62-year-old strategist was unable to bring a new breeze to Brazilian football. On the contrary, this team played very boring and lacked vitality, despite still having many world-class stars in the squad.
The CBF should have waited until the 2026 World Cup qualifiers were over to decide on Mr. Dorival's future. But the humiliating defeat to arch-rival Argentina forced them to make the decision to "fire the general" to reassure public opinion.
Brazil are in their worst ever World Cup qualifying campaign, sitting fourth in the South American standings with 21 points, one point ahead of sixth-placed Colombia, who currently hold the final knockout spot.
Brazil have never lost so many games, conceded so many goals or set so many negative records in a qualifying tournament. They have lost 5 out of 14 games and conceded 16 goals.
