Four Key Cybersecurity Trends in 2025

NDO - The increase in attacks from artificial intelligence will be the latest cybersecurity trend in 2025. In addition, Vietnam accounts for 12% of global exposed accounts in 2024.

On the afternoon of April 1, Viettel Threat Intelligence just released a report on the information security risk situation in Vietnam, and at the same time made important forecasts about cybersecurity trends in 2025.

2025: 4 key trends

Accordingly, information security threats are forecast to continue to increase with 4 main trends:

One is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI)-based attacks . Attack groups will leverage AI to create harder-to-detect malware and build sophisticated spoofing campaigns, including voice, image, and video spoofing.

Second , the Internet of Things (IoT) and Blockchain connectivity become new targets . With the proliferation of IoT devices and Blockchain ecosystems, hackers will focus on poorly secured devices and cryptocurrency trading platforms, leading to great financial and data risks.

Third , Ransomware as a Service (RaaS) is a type of encrypted virus. When ransomware infects a computer, it encrypts or blocks access to data on the disk. To return to normal operation, users must transfer money to the account to remove the ransomware.

Ransomware will continue to grow, becoming a popular service. This allows even those without deep technical skills to launch ransomware attacks, while also using more sophisticated encryption techniques.

Fourth , fileless malware attacks . Attacks using malware that runs directly on RAM or built-in tools like PowerShell will increase, making detection and response more difficult.

2024: 4 key events

The report also emphasizes a significant increase in information security threats in Vietnam in 2024 with 4 key events:

One is the widespread ransomware attacks . Ransomware groups such as Lockbit and Blackcat continue to expand their operations, causing serious damage with more than 10 TB of data encrypted and ransom demands of nearly $11 million. These attacks not only encrypt data but also combine information theft to increase ransom pressure.

Second , data leaks have increased sharply . Vietnam recorded more than 14.5 million leaked accounts, accounting for 12% of the global total. The increase in the sale of personal information and corporate documents on online platforms has created many great risks for organizations.

Vietnam accounts for 12% of exposed accounts globally.

Third , the increase in DDoS attacks . The number of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks reached more than 924 thousand, an increase of 34% compared to the previous year, with large attacks exceeding 1 Tbps, focusing on the Finance, Technology, and Public Services sectors.

Fourth , the activities of APT groups are increasingly sophisticated . APT attack - Advanced Persistent Threat is a term used to describe an attack campaign that uses the most advanced, high-tech techniques to attack the system's weak points, with the aim of taking control of the system for as long as possible. Groups such as Mustang Panda, Lazarus, and APT32 have used new techniques such as DLL-sideloading, Ransomware, and Domain Fronting to attack Financial, Public Service, and Energy organizations, causing great damage to reputation and finances.

To effectively respond to these trends, Viettel Threat Intelligence recommends that businesses build a continuous cybersecurity monitoring and response system, apply modern governance models such as zero-trust, regularly review and patch vulnerabilities, invest in advanced security technology, and build an information security culture for employees.

Viettel Threat Intelligence's "Vietnam's Information Security Risk Situation in 2024" report provides detailed information on current threats and forecasts trends in the coming year, helping individuals and organizations be more proactive in protecting information assets.
