On the afternoon of December 21, in Phung Nguyen commune, Lam Thao district (Phu Tho province), the Ministry of Transport held a ceremony to launch the construction of the new Phong Chau bridge.
The project has a total investment of over 635 billion VND and is implemented under an emergency construction order with Thang Long Project Management Board as the investor and Army Corps 12 and Truong Son Construction Corporation as the contractor.
Giving the construction order, Mr. Tran Hong Minh, Minister of Transport, requested Army Corps 12 and contractors to quickly start work, ensure progress, labor safety and quality of the project, and mobilize full equipment, machinery, and construction workers in 3 shifts and 4 teams.
Mr. Minh emphasized that, according to the Prime Minister's request, on December 22, 2025, Army Corps 12 must complete and organize the inauguration ceremony of the new Phong Chau bridge.
Minister Tran Hong Minh also requested Phu Tho province and related units to closely coordinate with the Thang Long Project Management Board, continue to create favorable conditions, promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, ensure security and order so that investors and contractors can ensure progress and efficiency of the project.
The investor representative, Thang Long Project Management Board (Ministry of Transport) said that the urgent implementation of the new bridge construction aims to promptly handle the collapse of the old Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C. Ensuring urgency, resolving traffic disruptions, and soon connecting the traffic network in the area.
Thereby, creating favorable conditions for people to travel across both sides of the river connecting Tam Nong district with Lam Thao district, developing socio-economy, ensuring national defense and security in the area.
According to design, the new Phong Chau bridge has a total length of nearly 653m, ensuring 4 lanes for motor vehicles.
The starting point of the project is on National Highway 32C, in Phung Nguyen commune (Lam Thao district) and the end point is in Van Xuan commune (Tam Nong district).
The bridge is constructed using reinforced concrete beams and prestressed reinforced concrete. The main bridge consists of 3 continuous beam spans, balanced cantilever, reinforced concrete abutments and piers, and bored pile foundation. The road connecting the two ends of the bridge ensures the scale of a level III plain road, with a design speed of 80km/h.
Earlier, at around 10am on September 9, Phong Chau Bridge collapsed, causing two spans to fall into the Red River. The incident caused 10 vehicles (1 truck, 2 tractor-trailers, 6 motorbikes, 1 electric motorbike) to fall into the river, leaving 8 people missing.
