Toyota is preparing a new way of producing next-generation electric vehicles (expected to hit the market in 2026).
Accordingly, the production line will not use a conveyor system for vehicles being built. Instead, these vehicles will drive themselves through the stages of the production process. Part of this new plan has been applied at Toyota's Motomachi Plant in Aichi Prefecture, Japan (pictured).
According to Toyota representatives, by combining sensor recognition technology and self-driving technology, partially completed cars will move slowly inside the factory, as if they were being transported by a conveyor belt system.
By optimizing its manufacturing processes, Toyota aims to cut its current investment costs in factories in half. The Japanese automaker also aims to introduce solid-state batteries as early as 2027, which Toyota hopes will reduce charging times and increase vehicle range.
