On May 3, information from the Vietnam Bar Federation said that the federation had just sent a dispatch to the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention - Ministry of Public Security, Hanoi City Police, and Ho Chi Minh City Police to report the situation of impersonating law firms to commit fraud.
Accordingly, at the end of April, the Vietnam Bar Federation received a petition for support from YKVN Law Company Limited regarding the company and its member lawyers being impersonated to commit fraud on the internet to appropriate property.
Specifically, since the beginning of 2024, two offices of YKVN Law Firm in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have received many phone calls and emails from a number of individuals reporting that they were contacted by a number of individuals claiming to be lawyers of YKVN Law Firm to advise and assist them in reclaiming money they had been defrauded online.
These individuals requested YKVN Law Firm to confirm whether the people contacting them were lawyers or staff of the company and whether the company provided services to handle the issue of recovering money defrauded online.
The law firm stated that it did not have any such lawyers or personnel and did not provide services to recover money defrauded online.
Through the feedback of some individuals, this law firm was informed that there is a group of people who regularly approach people who have been scammed out of money on social networking groups (such as Facebook) or online messaging platforms (such as Telegram, Viber, Zalo), impersonating YKVN and YKVN lawyers to promise that the lawyers will help them get their money back and support them in performing services related to houses, land, stocks, etc.
After receiving the advance payment from the scammer asking for support, the subjects cut off contact.
This unit also pointed out a fake website https:/www.congtyluatvn2024.com and a page account on Facebook using the name and logo of YKVN: https://www.facebook.com/ctyluathopdanhvkyn?locale=viVN.
According to the Vietnam Bar Federation, the number of cases of impersonating lawyers and law practice organizations to commit fraud on social networking sites is showing signs of increasing, negatively affecting the reputation and image of lawyers in society.
At the end of 2023, the Vietnam Bar Federation sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Information and Communications to reflect on this situation and request competent authorities to take measures to prevent and coordinate handling.
The Bar Federation now forwards the reflection of YKVN Law Firm LLC to the above agencies for consideration and settlement according to their authority and to promptly take measures to handle and prevent the above-mentioned acts with signs of violating criminal law.
