The US presidential election is tense until the last days.

Each district, each vote, especially in the battleground states, is a target that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris want to win on their way to conquering the White House.

“Tight” and “unpredictable” are the words that the US media has used in recent weeks to describe the race for the White House between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris. In the final days before the official election on November 5, observers are still not too confident that any candidate will truly prevail.

Unpredictable situation

The focus of the sprint is on the performance of the two candidates in the battleground states. A CNN poll released on October 30 showed that when surveying about 700-800 people in each state in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, Vice President Harris of the Democratic Party leads former President Trump of the Republican Party in the two states (48% compared to 43% in Michigan and 51% compared to 45% in Wisconsin). Both candidates have the same support rate of 48% in Pennsylvania. Mr. Trump won the above three states in 2016; then 4 years later, all three "changed color" when leaning towards President Joe Biden.

62 million early votes, both Trump-Harris candidates say they are winning

Fox 9 quoted Nate Silver, founder of the US election analysis site FiveThirtyEight, as saying that his "intuition" told him that Trump would win. FiveThirtyEight also ran simulations of the 2024 presidential election using economic, demographic and polling data. Trump won 52 out of 100 simulations, with the rest going to Harris. Meanwhile, Professor Allan Lichtman of American University, who claims to have correctly predicted the results of 9/10 of the most recent US presidential elections, maintains his position that Harris will win. Speaking to Fox 5 this week, Lichtman emphasized that he did not change his predictions just to match the polls.

Another statistic from The Hill /Decision Desk HQ as of October 30 shows that Mr. Trump has a 53% chance of winning, while according to a synthesis of national polls, Ms. Harris received 48.3% support, compared to Mr. Trump's 47.7%. Analysts say that the current polls are small in scale and have a large margin of error, so it is difficult to make assessments about which candidate will be more prominent in this year's election. Before the official election day, there were more than 57 million early votes, according to data from the University of Florida.

Wisconsin Spotlight

Both presidential candidates are scheduled to stop in the battleground state of Wisconsin on October 30. For Harris, it is an event focused on mobilizing support from young voters, some of whom are first-time voters. "Every day I see the promise of America in the hands of young leaders, first-time voters. I love your generation. One of the reasons is that you are all so eager for change," Harris told more than 10,000 people attending the event in Madison, Wisconsin. Harris' campaign focused on two of the top issues here - the economy and abortion rights.

US Election: Ms. Harris pledges 'new path' for America to move forward

More than 200 km from Madison, in Green Bay (Wisconsin), attention was focused on Mr. Trump's appearance in a reflective vest, the uniform of a garbage collector. The image of him sitting on a garbage truck answering the press was seen by observers as a response to President Joe Biden's statement. Mr. Biden was accused of creating unnecessary trouble for the Democratic Party's campaign, when he said that Mr. Trump's supporters were "trash". The Republican candidate said that the "disguise" was just a bit of entertainment, before focusing on important issues. He spent most of his speech in Green Bay talking about immigration, emphasizing that he would end the massive influx of immigrants into the United States. "Then the work of restoring our country will begin," he said.

Wisconsin is one of the battleground states where the two candidates are spending a lot of time and resources competing for voters’ votes in each district. In particular, Dane County, which has the fastest population growth rate in Wisconsin, is considered to play an important role in the final result in this state. Both Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris are expected to return to Wisconsin on November 1.

Many Gen Z voters hide their choices

Axios on October 30 cited a survey of more than 1,800 voters, saying that 23% of respondents said they lied to friends and relatives about the candidate they intended to vote for, including 48% of Gen Z, 38% of Gen Y, and 17% of Gen X. The survey also showed that 58% of people said that who to vote for is a private matter.
