Unexpected 'competition ratio' for 10th grade public school admissions in Hanoi

However, this ratio is not the only factor to decide high or low benchmark scores, because when registering for the exam, students have calculated and considered carefully to "cut their coat according to their cloth" to get into schools that are suitable for their abilities.

TOP SCHOOLS WITH HIGH "ODDS"

According to the announcement of the number of students registering for the 10th grade public high school entrance exam for the 2023-2024 school year by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training on the morning of May 17, there were 104,917 students registering for their first choice, the number of second and third choices were more than 101,064 and 64,099 respectively. Accordingly, the "competition ratio" (number of first choice over quota) fluctuates from 1/0.51 to 1/3.55. To enter the 10 high schools with the highest "competition ratio", students have to compete with three or four other students, while at some schools, the number of registered students is even lower than the quota. In general, the "competition ratio" of the top 10 schools this year is higher than last year (fluctuating from 1/2.33 to 1/3.03).

Of which, Khuong Ha High School has the highest "competition ratio": 1/3.55, meaning that for every 4 students, only 1 student is admitted. This school only enrolls 280 students, but receives 995 applications. This is a primary, secondary and high school, just entering the 3rd admission season and the benchmark score 2 years ago was in the lower group compared to high schools in the inner city area. The benchmark score in 2022 of this school is 34.5 points. Also in the top 10 in terms of "competition ratio" this year are schools that had low entrance benchmark scores in previous years such as: Nguyen Van Cu High School, Trung Van High School...

The reason why students are rushing to register for admission to these schools this year, in addition to the reason that the schools are located in areas with high population density, may also be because parents and students choose safe options, because this year Hanoi continues to apply the regulation that does not allow students to change their admission options after knowing the "competition ratio" of each school.

Coming in second in terms of "competition ratio" this year is Chu Van An High School with a ratio of 1/3.43. The non-specialized system of this school recruited 270 students, receiving 926 applications. Tied for third place are also easy-to-guess names such as Son Tay High School and Kim Lien High School, both with a "competition ratio" of 1/2.62. Son Tay High School received 708 first-choice applications for non-specialized grade 10 but the quota was 108. As for Kim Lien High School, last year it was not in the top 10 but this year the "competition ratio" increased because the quota was reduced by 90. The remaining positions belong to Le Quy Don - Ha Dong, Cau Giay, Yen Hoa, Phan Dinh Phung High Schools, with "competition ratios" ranging from 1/2.36 to 1/2.23.

N MANY SCHOOLS ENROLLMENT NUMBER LESS THAN TASK

On the other hand, among the 10 high schools with the lowest level of competition in Hanoi, 9 schools have a "competition ratio" of less than 1, meaning that the number of registered students is less than the quota. These are all suburban schools, far from the city center, with a low number of junior high school graduates. Among them, Minh Quang High School has the lowest "competition ratio", only 1/0.51, the number of students applying is only half of the quota. Next are Bac Luong Son, Tho Xuan, Tu Lap, Bat Bat, Xuan Khanh, Nguyen Van Troi, Ung Hoa B, and Luu Hoang high schools with competition ratios ranging from 1/0.69 to 1/0.98. Dai Cuong High School is the only school in the top 10 from the bottom with a "competition ratio" of more than 1. This school has a quota of 315 and received 322 applications. This level is similar to last year when the 10 least competitive schools had "competition ratios" ranging from 1/0.6 - 1/0.95.

DOES THE "COMPETITION RATIO" DETERMINE THE STANDARD SCORE?

In 2022, the highest "competition ratio" is Yen Hoa High School (1/3.03), which is also the school with the second highest standard score in the city, with 42.25 points, just after the non-specialized system of Chu Van An High School (43.25 points). So this year, will the standard score for grade 10 of Khuong Ha High School, which has the highest "competition ratio", be among the top or second highest in the city?

More than 55% of students enter public grade 10

In 2023, Hanoi will have 129,210 secondary school graduates. Of these, 72,000 will attend public schools (equivalent to 55.7%), the rest will attend autonomous public schools or private schools (23.2%), and vocational education centers.

Many experts believe that high or low "competition ratio" is not the only factor that determines the standard score. Last year, Yen Hoa High School had the highest "competition ratio" and the second highest standard score in the city, but for many years, this school has always been in the top group. As for Khuong Ha High School, which has the lowest standard score compared to inner-city high schools, even though the "competition ratio" is the highest, the standard score can only increase slightly and cannot jump to the top group. This is because when registering for the exam, students have calculated and considered based on their learning ability to choose a school with a suitable standard score.

Although many schools have not been in the top schools with the highest "competition rate" such as Viet Duc High School, Thang Long High School, Tran Phu High School... their admission scores have always been among the top schools. The reason why few students register for admission is due to the mentality of "avoiding" schools with high admission scores for fear of failing. For example, this year Thang Long High School was assigned 675 quotas but only 889 students registered for admission because last year's admission score was 41.5, one of the schools with the highest admission scores in the city. Students who register for schools with top admission scores are the most confident in their academic ability, so although the number of competitors is not high, it is still a tense "race" for the best students.

According to regulations, Hanoi students are not allowed to change their wishes after registration. Therefore, information about the "competition ratio" is only for students to refer to and prepare appropriately for the exam.
