Typhoon Tra Mi hits Philippines, 92 areas flooded

The Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted the latest report today (October 23) from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) saying that the center of Typhoon Tra Mi (local name is Typhoon Kristine) is about 310 km east of Baler city, capital of Aurora province, and 310 km east-northeast of Infanta city, Quezon province.

According to Pagasa, storm Tra Mi is moving west-northwest at a speed of 15 km/h. The strongest wind near the storm's center is 85 km/h and gusts in the storm can reach 105 km/h. Experts warn that in the next 24 hours, the Philippines is expected to face very rough seas, waves from 2.5 to 6.5 m high, along with dangerous thunderstorms and tornadoes. Severe flooding will occur in low-lying areas due to heavy rain lasting for many hours.

Pagasa advised all vessels, residents and tourists to seek shelter immediately or stay at ports. Hundreds of passengers are stranded at several ports due to cancelled sailings on Luzon island. The government has deployed security, medical and rescue forces to beaches and resorts to ensure the safety of tourists during the upcoming "Undas" (Day of the Dead) holiday.

Disaster officials warned that the situation could worsen as the full impact of the disaster is expected to hit areas such as Isabela province on October 23 or Aurora province on October 24.

In an update report at 8 a.m. on October 23, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that a total of 382,020 people from 77,910 households were affected by the bad weather as the typhoon was about to make landfall. Nearly half of them had fled their homes and were residing in 306 evacuation centers nationwide.

The NDRRMC is monitoring 92 flooded areas across the country. Authorities are also verifying reports that one person has been injured in the disaster.

More than 20 flights in Luzon and Visayas were canceled on October 22, affecting more than 1,000 passengers, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

More than 17,000 schools with a total of 7.38 million students in 12 regions have suspended in-person classes to prevent natural disasters, according to the Philippine Department of Education. At least four public schools were submerged by floodwaters.

Tra Mi is the 11th tropical storm to hit the Philippines since the beginning of this year. Many regional and international meteorological agencies forecast that Tra Mi may strengthen into a typhoon and enter the East Sea after leaving the Philippine Area of ​​Observation on October 25.
