People participate in rice cooking competitions, a beautiful cultural feature preserved and promoted in Thuong Nam and Thuong Bac villages, Hai Nhan commune, Nghi Son town.
On the third day of Tet, when arriving at Thuong Nam and Thuong Bac villages, Hai Nhan commune (Nghi Son town), everyone was immersed in the cultural space here, joining in the cheers, cheering along with the sounds of pounding and winnowing to select the best quality rice grains for the rice cooking competition. The unique feature of the competition is that people cook while walking, the rice pot cannot touch the ground, each team has 6 people, regardless of gender in the 2 villages. Within 25 minutes, the competition goes through 3 stages: pounding rice, winnowing rice and cooking rice, the team that cooks the rice quickly and sticky will win first prize.
According to legend, the traditional game of cooking rice at the beginning of the year originated from the reign of King Quang Trung. In 1789, when King Quang Trung marched north to defeat the Qing army, on the way to Tinh Gia prefecture, he stopped at Do Xuyen village, Hai Thanh commune (now Hai Thanh ward, Nghi Son town) to recruit soldiers and consolidate forces. Here, the king ordered the villages in Tinh Gia prefecture to cook rice. From then on, every early spring, many localities in the area organized rice cooking competitions, including Thuong Nam and Thuong Bac villages, Hai Nhan commune.
Mentioning Nghi Son town is mentioning Ba Lang fish sauce, famous far and wide. From fish caught from the sea, the people of Hai Thanh ward make a golden brown, thick and fragrant dipping sauce that the people call mam chit. Ba Lang fish sauce is crystallized and distilled from production labor, expressing the beauty of the culinary culture of the coastal people, distilled from the salty taste of salt, the sweetness of fish and the drops of sweat imbued with the emotions of the people of Nghi Son coastal area.
As a land that has gone through many ups and downs of history, Nghi Son town currently has 38 relics, scenic spots, many traditional craft villages and nearly 20 traditional festivals, marking the lives and careers of many prominent figures in the history of the formation and development of the homeland and the country. Among them, the Lach Bang relic and scenic spot cluster associated with the people of the coastal area here are the Temple of National Hero Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue, Lach Bang Temple, Dot Tien Pagoda...
Nghi Son island commune also has the ancient name Bien Son, which is an island emerging in the middle of a vast area of water in Bang estuary. In the past, to get to the island from the mainland, people had to use boats, but later, due to the impact of geological tectonic processes and people building dikes to reclaim the sea, Bien Son was connected to the mainland. On the island commune, there is a temple to worship King Quang Trung in Bac Son village, this is a sacred temple hundreds of years old, although it has gone through many historical changes and the destruction of war, however, until now, the temple still retains the ancient, quiet features of time. In Nghi Son island commune, there are many relics with historical and cultural values such as square ancient wells associated with Cham culture, or the temple to worship Queen Tran Quy Phi, Ngoc well associated with the legend of My Chau - Trong Thuy...
