Students who want to upgrade their driving license must have enough driving time or practice and safe driving kilometers as follows: Class B1 automatic to B1: driving time of 01 year or more and 12,000 km of safe driving or more; Class B1 to B2: driving time of 01 year or more and 12,000 km of safe driving or more; Class B2 to C, C to D, D to E; Classes B2, C, D, E to F respectively; Classes D, E to FC: practice time of 03 years or more and 50,000 km of safe driving or more; Class B2 to D, C to E: practice time of 05 years or more and 100,000 km of safe driving or more.

Students who want to upgrade their driver's license to classes D or E must have a junior high school diploma or equivalent.

Article 17 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT stipulates the validity period of a driving license as follows: Driving licenses of classes A1, A2, A3 have no validity period.

A Class B1 driving license is valid until the driver is 55 years old for women and 60 years old for men; in case the driver is over 45 years old for women and over 50 years old for men, the driving license is issued for 10 years from the date of issue.

Class A4 and B2 driving licenses are valid for 10 years from the date of issue. Class C, D, E, FB2, FC, FD, FE driving licenses are valid for 05 years from the date of issue.
