The embankment worth 80 billion VND has collapsed about 70m after 5 months of acceptance, and has not yet been repaired by the construction unit.
Landslide 70m, subsidence about 1,000m
On November 1, many workers were still urgently removing and reinstalling pavement tiles at the embankment construction site to prevent landslides on Ha Giang canal, from Giang Thanh District Administrative Center - Dam Chit residential area (Tan Khanh Hoa commune, Giang Thanh district, Kien Giang province).
The landslide embankment area was fenced off for repair.
Mr. Pham Thanh Hong, Chief of Office of Giang Thanh District People's Committee, said that about 1,000m of embankment had sunk bricks because the construction was not compacted properly. Therefore, the contractor had to remove the sidewalk bricks, re-treat the ground, then re-pave the bricks, and about 30% of the damage had been repaired.
As for the 70m long embankment section that suffered serious landslides, the contractor has removed all the damaged columns, embankment walls...
"Since the beginning of September, we have been rebuilding the new iron frame, reprocessing the entire foundation area, and preparing to pour concrete," said an officer of the construction unit.
Mr. Hong said it is expected that the repair of this embankment will take two more weeks to complete.
The embankment project was completed and put into use in mid-March 2024. On August 4, 2024, landslides occurred in three segments A35, A36, and A37.
The landslide is expected to be repaired in two weeks.
After the incident occurred, the District People's Committee directed the District Construction Investment Project Management Board (QLDAĐTXD) together with construction units, supervision units, and design consultants to inspect and survey the site.
At the same time, the District People's Committee organized meetings to propose solutions to complete the project as soon as possible; assigned the District Construction Project Management Board to directly monitor the progress of the project.
However, the progress of the implementation of the project is still slower than expected and the contractor's commitment. The construction time is right at the time of rain and storm, so the progress is somewhat affected.
Up to now, the troubleshooting of the three above segments has completed the following items: pile driving, construction and installation of formwork reinforcement and concrete pouring for the bottom slab of the three segments.

The construction unit is preparing for the remaining construction items: pouring concrete for the embankment wall; filling soil behind the embankment; completing sidewalks, trees, internal roads, curbs and railings.
At the same time, complete the lighting system at these three segments and it is expected to be completed by November 30, 2024.
The cause is still unknown.
Ms. Hai T, who sells goods near this embankment, confirmed: "This canal has never had landslides before. I don't understand why it collapsed when the embankment was built."

Mr. Duong Khanh Binh, Director of the Construction Investment Project Management Board of Giang Thanh district (representing the investor) said that around July 2024, the project had signs of ground subsidence.
The project is worth about 80 billion VND, has a total length of over 3km, with items such as embankments, sidewalks, trees, internal roads, drainage system, lighting system...
The landslide embankment area is about 70m long.
The embankment structure collapsed, leaning towards Ha Giang canal with a length of nearly 70m. The incident occurred in less than 5% of the entire route, causing damage of about 300 million VND.
When meeting with relevant units, the Chairman of Giang Thanh District People's Committee requested the consulting unit to re-examine the entire embankment, monitor, and calculate the design to have a specific report.
Many local residents have been concerned and questioned the quality of the project. Therefore, the investor proposed hiring an independent unit to inspect the entire project.
Workers are re-tiling.
However, as of November 1, 2024, the cause of the incident has not been determined.
The construction unit of the project is Bridge and Road Company 10, which is responsible for the repair costs, because the project is still under warranty.

According to the report of the Giang Thanh District Construction Project Management Board, in 2023, the above embankment project suffered a landslide.
At that time, during the construction process, the investor's representative doubted the stability of the project and requested the Inspection Center of Kien Giang Department of Construction to inspect and assess the stability and load-bearing safety of the project.
However, the Inspection Center of Kien Giang Department of Construction refused to do so.
