There is not much time left until the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025, but up to this point, 9th grade students and schools across the country still do not know the enrollment plan.
Third exam pressure
The 10th grade entrance exam in localities takes place every June. In previous years, students would know the admission plan for the next school year at this time, but for the 2024-2025 school year, although almost a semester has passed, the admission plan has not yet been announced.
The pressure of the 10th grade entrance exam always makes students and parents extremely stressed, especially next year, the exam will have many changes.
The 2024-2025 school year marks the first 10th grade exam for students under the 2018 General Education Program. According to the draft regulations on junior high school and high school admissions that the Ministry of Education and Training is soliciting opinions on, if the entrance exam plan is applied, there will be 3 subjects: Math, Literature and a third subject or a combined exam selected by the Department of Education and Training, the university with the high school and announced before March 31 every year.
The third exam subject is selected from among the subjects assessed by scores in the secondary school general education program.
In Hanoi, in recent years, the issue of whether to take 3 or 4 subjects has always been a hot topic before the 10th grade entrance exam. Therefore, the question of how to choose the 3rd subject as stipulated in the draft is being raised.
Many opinions say that if the exam plan is approved, every year students and parents will have to live in fear, no different from waiting for the 4th exam in previous years.
Ms. Nguyen Hong Giang (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) has a daughter who is preparing for the 10th grade entrance exam next year. The first year of taking the exam under the new program, both mother and daughter are under a lot of pressure, while up to this point the exam plan has not been finalized.
Ms. Giang said: “Every year, having to wait for the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam or waiting for the Department of Education and Training to choose the subjects will make it difficult for teachers and students to stabilize their psychology in teaching and learning. I hope the Ministry of Education and Training will soon announce the exam plan so that students can rest assured to review and prepare best for the upcoming race.”
Nguyen Trung Kien, a 9th grader at Phuc Xa Secondary School (Hanoi), said he was very worried about the third subject. If the locality chooses a combination test, the exam will be much more difficult. Students will have to study 4 or 5 subjects. Moreover, the announcement of the third subject in March will leave students with little time to review.
Regulations expected to be issued before December 31
At present, although the Ministry of Education and Training has not yet "finalized" an official plan, the review for grade 9 students is still being implemented by schools as planned.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy - Principal of Tan Tien Secondary School (Tan Tien Commune, Chuong My District) said that the school currently has 170 9th grade students, divided into 4 classes. Currently, the school still ensures teaching according to the program, focusing more on the two subjects of Math and Literature. When the city announces the third exam subject, the school continues to build a suitable plan with students to prepare well for the exam.
“Through understanding the feelings of students and parents in the school, most of them hope that the third subject will be English or an independent subject. If the city chooses the third subject to be a combination subject, it needs to be announced soon so that parents and students can feel secure and focus more on the subjects,” Ms. Thuy shared.
At Lomonosov Secondary and High School (Hanoi), teaching for grade 9 students is currently being implemented according to the plan and requirements of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung - Vice Principal of the school said: "The school does not focus on any particular subject. However, the general psychology of students, parents and teachers is to hope that the exam subjects will be announced soon, so that students have a certain amount of time to review in depth and achieve better results."
Regarding this issue, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long directed the Ministry of Education and Training to carefully review, research, and absorb public opinions; promptly announce the 10th grade exam plan so that schools and students can proactively have appropriate and effective teaching and review plans.
As planned, the Ministry of Education and Training will issue regulations on junior high school and high school admissions before December 31, 2024.
