Công LuậnCông Luận22/05/2024

Speaking at the opening of the seminar, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietNamNet Newspaper Vo Dang Thien said that the trend of using surveillance cameras is becoming more and more popular in Vietnam today. Surveillance cameras are not only used in households but are also an important component in the e-Government system, digital government and smart cities, helping to monitor traffic, security and order...

However, in recent times, many cases of private images of famous people have been posted on social networks due to leaks from surveillance cameras in their own homes. In addition, surveillance cameras used for public and government systems, if not meeting standards, will potentially pose a risk to national security.

The seminar "Basic network information security standards for surveillance cameras" took place on the morning of May 22 in Hanoi.

“Therefore, issuing standards for cameras and proactively producing Make in Vietnam cameras is an urgent need to ensure information safety and security for Vietnam,” Mr. Vo Dang Thien emphasized.

At the seminar, security expert Vu Ngoc Son (National Cyber Security Association) shared that the main reasons for data and information leaks via cameras are due to users setting weak passwords, using default passwords, using email accounts, social networks to manage cameras; and not changing passwords when receiving handovers from technicians.

The camera has an undiscovered software or hardware security vulnerability (zeroday) and is not updated with a patch. In addition, information can be leaked when the server or cloud has a security vulnerability, hackers attack the server, or the camera has loose access rights. Leaking information and data from the camera can lead to many unpredictable consequences.

In the context of too many cameras circulating with unknown origins, storing Vietnamese user data abroad and having no standards to ensure information security for users, the Ministry of Information and Communications has recently issued criteria on basic network information security requirements for surveillance cameras.

Accordingly, surveillance cameras must have product user manuals for users. To ensure information security for users, surveillance cameras must have authentication management and network attack prevention features.

Mr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Information Security, Ministry of Information and Communications, shared at the seminar.

Enterprises also need to proactively fix existing vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and risks that cause information insecurity, in order to meet the basic network information security requirements recommended by the Ministry of Information and Communications in the newly issued set of criteria.

Mr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) said: "The issuance of the set of criteria is important, because this is a premise for businesses participating in the production, import and trading of surveillance camera products and equipment in the Vietnamese market, to comprehensively review and re-evaluate the risk of information security loss for camera products and equipment provided by their units."

“The criteria set is an initial step, of a recommendation nature. Based on the reality of surveillance cameras, in the near future, the Ministry of Information and Communications will coordinate with relevant units to develop a set of National Technical Regulations on basic network information security requirements for surveillance cameras. With this set of regulations, mandatory technical standards must be followed, especially standards on information and data security,” said Mr. Tran Dang Khoa.
