Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, whose father and aunt were Prime Ministers, became Thailand's second female Prime Minister and the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold the position. She is also the youngest leader in Thai history.
She passed the required threshold of 51% of the vote with 319 votes, or nearly two-thirds of the seats in the House of Representatives. She was not present in Parliament but watched the vote from her Pheu Thai Party headquarters.
After winning the Pheu Thai Party's nomination on August 15, Ms. Paetongtarn, the youngest of Mr. Thaksin's three children, declared: "The country must move forward. We are determined, together, and we will move the country forward."

Ms Paetongtarn has never served in government and became prime minister just two days after Thailand's Constitutional Court removed the previous prime minister, Mr Srettha Thavisin, for appointing a cabinet minister with a criminal record.
Ms Paetongtarn ran the hotel arm of her family's business empire before entering politics in late 2022, and she was a near-constant presence on the campaign trail during last year's general election.
Ms Paetongtarn, known in Thailand by her nickname Ung Ing, is Mr Thaksin's youngest child. She grew up in Bangkok and studied hotel management in Britain before marrying a pilot.
