In April 2024, a source revealed that Apple would use Apple Silicon processors to run its AI servers. By June 2024, multiple reports said that Apple's entire data center would be powered by Apple Silicon.

By September 2024, the information that Apple uses Apple Silicon for AI servers was almost confirmed. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president, confirmed that Apple Intelligence runs on Apple Silicon, which helps increase the privacy of the company's AI services.

However, according to Ananda Baruah, an analyst at Loop Capital, Apple is spending about $1 billion to buy Nvidia servers for Generative AI. Specifically, the company has ordered 250 Nvidia NVL72 servers, priced from $3.7 million to $4 million each.

"Apple is officially entering the large-scale generative AI server space, with Super Micro Computer (SMCI) and Dell as key partners. While more information is still being gathered, it appears the company is building an AI server cluster for large language modeling (LLM)," Baruah wrote in a note to investors.

According to Nvidia, the NVL72 server includes 36 Grace CPUs and 72 Blackwell GPUs. However, as of March 18, Nvidia has not officially launched this server line. Apple may have pre-ordered to expand the system, but it is unclear whether this is for internal research or for public AI services.

If Baruah's report is accurate, this raises the question: Does Apple really believe in Apple Silicon, or does it still have to rely on Nvidia for AI development?
