The 24th Road to Olympia championship title belongs to Vo Quang Phu Duc, a student at Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted (Thua Thien Hue). Phu Duc excellently surpassed the other 3 contestants with a score of 220.
Phu Duc had an impressive victory, leading throughout all the competitions. In the moment of coronation, joy and pride were evident on the face of the Hue male student.
With an absolute victory in all 4 rounds, Vo Quang Phu Duc won the laurel wreath, becoming the champion of Road to Olympia 2024.
Win through grit and smart tactics
Phu Duc shared that the secret to becoming a champion lies in his tenacity and smart tactics. “Tenacosity is demonstrated through maintaining form and mentality, while intelligence is demonstrated through tactical calculations at important moments of the game,” the male student said.
Keeping his mind and spirit stable right from the start, Phu Duc had an impressive opening in the Warm-up round, by answering all 6 questions correctly and achieving the maximum score. From that moment on, the Hue male student led the mountain climbing team until the end of the competition.
Especially in the Obstacle Course round, Phu Duc's ability made the whole audience admire and respect him. When the first horizontal question was just read out, the answer had not yet been announced, the male student pressed the bell to signal to answer the obstacle. The very fast but accurate answer "Netzero" of the 10X made the Obstacle Course round end quickly.
“I calculated that 2050 was the answer to the first suggested question. This fact made me think of Netzero right away, because the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible was set this year,” said Phu Duc.
The male student from Quoc Hoc Hue School added that his decision to press the bell to answer the obstacle course question early was very reckless. However, he accepted it and did not regret it because he wanted to gain an advantage and create a gap with the remaining competitors.
Phu Duc said he won thanks to his bravery and smart tactics.
The smart strategy was applied by Phu Duc at the moment of pressing the bell to answer the final question of the competition. Because the contestant right behind him, Nguyen Phu, was 20 points behind, when he won the right to answer, even if he gave the wrong answer, Phu Duc would only be deducted 15 points, still 5 points ahead of his opponent and would definitely win the final.
The scenario then took place as planned, making the Hue male student the owner of the prestigious laurel wreath. With this achievement, Phu Duc brought a record to his beloved Hue National High School for the Gifted. Up to now, this school has had 7 contestants in the Olympia finals, of which 3 contestants won the championship.
Cherished the dream of Olympia since childhood
Born into a family with a tradition of studiousness, Phu Duc was equipped with a solid foundation of knowledge from an early age. For 11 consecutive years, the male student has maintained his form with the title of excellent student. Math is the subject that the champion of Road to Olympia 2024 loves the most.
Few people know that when he first entered elementary school, the Hue native had a dream of becoming a contestant on the show and winning the prestigious laurel wreath. That dream was nurtured by Phu Duc throughout his years of studying.
In grade 10, Phu Duc registered to participate in Red Laurel - a simulation competition of Road to Olympia organized by the school. After many fierce competitions, Phu Duc became the representative of Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted to participate in Road to Olympia in 2024.
“The Road to Olympia is an intellectual playground, requiring a deep and broad knowledge base. Coming to Olympia not only helps me consolidate my knowledge, but also allows me to acquire new knowledge from the program," Phu Duc confided.
The 2024 Olympia champion always showed calmness and confidence in all competitions.
Mr. Le Van Luan, Phu Duc's homeroom teacher and Math teacher, said that his first impression of his student was that he was intelligent, had a good mind, was quick-witted, and was eager to explore, research, and expand his knowledge in all subjects. In addition to studying, Phu Duc was very active in participating in movements, was sociable with friends, and polite to teachers.
Bursting with joy when for the third time a student brought home the laurel wreath for his hometown and school, Mr. Nguyen Phu Tho, Principal of Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted, said that Phu Duc is the result of a long and methodical process of selecting candidates.
"I want to thank Phu Duc for bringing glory to the school and to the ancient capital. Your laurel wreath will inspire the next generations at Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted," said Mr. Tho.
After winning and returning home, the first thing the champion of Road to Olympia 2024 wants to do is dedicate the prestigious laurel wreath to his late grandmother.
"There are too many memories to tell about my beloved grandmother. She is a part of the driving force that helps me conquer my dreams and reach the heights I have today," Phu Duc emotionally said.
Before she passed away, her grandmother always wanted to see her male student stand on the stage of Road to Olympia and further, win the prestigious laurel wreath. And today, her grandson Phu Duc has done it.
Sharing his future plans, the Hue native said that at the moment, he has not made a decision on whether to study abroad or not. If he chooses to stay in Vietnam, Phu Duc will study Artificial Intelligence at VinUni University.
