(CLO) On the afternoon of December 8, at the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, Hanoi, the exhibition "Echoes - from the Nguyen Dynasty's Nine Urns to Contemporary Creations" took place. The event displayed 81 woodcut paintings inspired by the model of 162 bronze casts on the Nine Urns.
Previously, in March 2024, the project was launched at the Hue Museum of Fine Arts and attracted the attention of a large audience. This exhibition marks an effort to continue and promote traditional cultural values in today's context.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trang Thanh Hien, Project Manager, shared with the press.
Not only stopping with woodcut paintings, the exhibition "Echoes - from the Nguyen Dynasty's nine urns to contemporary creations" also has the participation of Bat Trang ceramic artisans Nguyen Tien Dat, Phung Tien Thanh and fashion designer Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan.
This is also the first time, on ceramic materials - household items and worship items, with blue and fire-changing glaze colors, the images from the Nguyen Dynasty's Nine Urns are once again honored.
At the same time, for the first time on traditional hand-embroidered products, the patterns on the Nine Tripod Cauldrons have created a new nuance. Everything will be like a symphony, giving the public a different perspective on the heritage.
Sharing with reporters, Associate Professor, Dr. Trang Thanh Hien, Project Manager, said: “It can be said that this exhibition does not stop at transforming the model of bronze engravings into new works on new materials, but the project also aims at developing creativity, creating a new approach with strong contemporary values.
Instead of considering the Nine Tripod Cauldrons as a cultural heritage associated with a bygone era, through the art of wood carving, ceramic art and embroidery art, the project implementers want to "market" the Nine Tripod Cauldrons in new forms, to promote a special heritage of Vietnamese cultural history".
Exhibition space "Echoes - from the Nguyen Dynasty's nine urns to contemporary creation".
"This is the first time that King Minh Mang requested artisans to create motifs about Vietnamese products. Therefore, this system of symbolic images is completely independent of the existing patterns in the history of Vietnamese art, many of which are influenced by Chinese culture. But if these were just images located on the Nine Tripod Cauldrons, we would have to go to Hue to enjoy them. Therefore, my colleagues, students and artists, wanted to turn them into woodcuts, so that we could bring these images everywhere," Associate Professor, Dr. Trang Thanh Hien added.
The Nine Tripod Cauldrons are one of the special cultural heritages of the Nguyen Dynasty, and in 2012 the Prime Minister signed a decision to classify them as a National Treasure. These are nine bronze cauldrons cast by King Minh Mang in 1835 to symbolize the everlasting strength of the dynasty and the prosperity of the Dai Nam nation.
In May 2024, the reliefs on the Nine Dynastic Urns of the Nguyen Dynasty were officially recognized by UNESCO as a Documentary Heritage of the Asia-Pacific region.

The Nine Tripod Cauldrons are considered a symbol of the power of the Nguyen Dynasty and the pinnacle of Dai Nam culture. After being completed in January of the year Dinh Dau (1837), these nine cauldrons have been placed at The Mieu Temple since then.
