9 Vietnamese universities in influence rankings

Vietnam has nine universities in THE's impact rankings, up two from last year and the most ever.

The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking organization announced the Impact Ranking on the evening of June 1, including 1,591 universities from 112 countries and territories. This is the fifth consecutive time THE has ranked on this topic.

The Impact Ranking assesses universities in their implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Specifically, some of the goals are: Eradicating poverty, Eradicating hunger, Gender equality, Climate protection, Good health and well-being, Quality education, Partnership for development goals, Reducing inequality.

This year, for the first time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Ho Chi Minh City Open University are included in the rankings. However, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is ranked in the top 301-400, the highest among Vietnamese universities. Ho Chi Minh City Open University is in the 1,001+ position.

Of the remaining seven representatives, Hanoi National University and Duy Tan University are ranked 401-600, both up 200 places compared to last year. Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, FPT University and Ton Duc Thang University are all ranked 601-800; Phenikaa University is ranked 801-1,000. Most of the rankings remain unchanged, except for FPT University, which rose from 801-1,000 in 2022.

The THE Impact Ranking scores are calculated as follows: SDG 17 (Partnership for Sustainable Development Goals) is mandatory and carries 22% of the total score. This score is combined with the three highest-scoring SDGs from the remaining 16 SDGs, each carrying a weight of 26%, to produce the final score. For each SDG, the score is based on the following factors: Research, Service, Community Engagement and Education.

This year, the scores of the schools ranged from 53.8 to 76.7 points. In SDG 17, the highest was Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics with 81.7 points. With SDG 4 (Quality Education), Hanoi National University scored 75.4 points, ranking first in Vietnam and 70th in the world.

Looking at the overall rankings, Australia's Western Sydney University continues to lead the way, followed by the UK's University of Manchester and Canada's Queen's University. Malaysia's emerging Universiti Sains Malaysia is in fourth place.

In Southeast Asia, Thailand has 65 ranked universities, Malaysia has 24, Indonesia 32 and the Philippines 29. Cambodia has the least with only one university present.

THE is one of the four most prestigious and influential university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS, ARWU and US News. This organization started ranking world universities in 2004.
