This information was presented at the seminar "Green transformation: From pressure to business opportunities", organized by Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper today, February 19.

SMEs face many difficulties in the greening process

Mr. Dinh Hong Ky, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Business Association (HUBA), said that in the past two years, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City Business Association to organize the Green Business Award, attracting great attention from the business community.

After two years of implementation, about 100 enterprises have met the criteria and been granted the Ho Chi Minh City Green Enterprise certificate. This shows that the green transformation trend is not only developing strongly in the city but also spreading across the country.

But there are still many challenges to consider. Currently, about 90% of Vietnamese businesses are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but most of the businesses that boldly make the green transition are large corporations. Meanwhile, SMEs face many difficulties in the greening process.

One of the biggest barriers is finance. According to statistics, about 65% of businesses have difficulty accessing capital to implement green projects.

Green transition is a must, not an option

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho - Director of the Institute of Strategy and Policy under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, green transformation and digital transformation are becoming inevitable requirements, in which digital transformation plays an important role as a tool to promote the green transformation process.

The major challenge to this process today is the volatility of the international situation. The second term of Donald Trump’s administration has made policy adjustments, including budget cuts for activities related to the green transition. However, Europe and China have maintained their commitments to the set roadmap.

"Green transformation is no longer an option, but has become a mandatory requirement. If businesses do not implement it, the risk of being eliminated from the market is very high, and can even lead to bankruptcy. Lessons from the textile industry clearly show this," Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho emphasized.

Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Lim Dyi Chang, Director of Corporate Banking at UOB Vietnam, acknowledged that Vietnam is making significant progress in the green transition process, striving to balance economic growth and sustainable development.

Vietnamese banks have provided about VND650 trillion in green credit, of which nearly 45% has been allocated to renewable energy projects. However, the proportion of green finance in total outstanding loans remains limited and long-term capital for sustainable projects has not met actual demand.

“To accelerate the green transition and move towards the Net Zero target, a multi-pronged approach is needed to support the economy to move from the traditional model to a green economy.

The Vietnamese government needs to continue to improve the legal and policy framework to facilitate businesses to adopt green technology and sustainable practices. Issuing clear guidelines, providing incentives and building a stable legal environment will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, while promoting investment in renewable energy, waste management and green infrastructure," Mr. Lim Dyi Chang suggested.
