Changing green consumption habits is no longer a slogan or trend but is gradually permeating life, becoming a habit of many consumers, especially young people.

Green consumption - from trend to habit
In the past three years, the kitchen of Ms. Mai Thi Chung (32 years old, Thu Duc City) has become much tidier without the piles of plastic bags.
Now, every time she goes to the supermarket, Ms. Chung always brings a cloth bag to store dry food, minimizing the use of plastic bags. Even the plastic bags that are required are not thrown away immediately, but are reused many times.
"If I forget to bring my personal bag, I will sort it out. I keep clean bags like paper bags, bags containing clothes and household items to reuse.
"As for dirtier bags, we use them as trash bags," Chung shared. At the same time, she said that her family also prioritizes environmentally friendly products such as stainless steel straws or glass straws instead of disposable plastic ones, and uses loofahs to wash dishes instead of cloth nets.
Similarly, Ms. Vu Thi Thu Huong (Go Vap district) changed her habit of buying take-away coffee every morning after watching a reality show about plastic waste spreading on beaches.
Currently, Ms. Huong has switched to using a thermos, asking the restaurant staff to pour directly into the thermos instead of a plastic cup. At first, it was a bit inconvenient because sometimes she forgot to bring it, but gradually it became a habit. "The restaurants are also used to customers asking to pour into their own bottles like me," she said.
Many consumer habits such as fast fashion shopping, hunting for promotional items... of young consumers are also gradually changing as awareness of environmental protection becomes clearer.
Businesses catch up with trends
According to Mr. Nguyen Thi, a lecturer in the law department at Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment, green consumption is turning from a trend into a daily habit, especially among Gen Z.
"The increased awareness of a lifestyle in harmony with nature has prompted young people to take action to protect the environment. This is not only a manifestation of civilization but also reflects the general development trend of society," Mr. Thi told Tuoi Tre.
Mr. Dang Trieu Hoa, General Director of Century Fiber Joint Stock Company, said that the company is focusing on developing recycled fibers, colored fibers and fibers with special features to both optimize profits and keep up with sustainable trends.
Over the past year, the company has successfully tested and is preparing to launch a series of high value-added yarn products that are not only environmentally friendly but also have special features such as Spandex yarn, "5 in 1" yarn with cooling, UV protection, anti-stick, quick-drying and moisture-wicking properties.
At the same time, the company is also implementing a greenhouse gas reduction plan with the goal of reducing emissions at Trang Bang factory by 29.4% in the period 2023 - 2027, according to SBTi agreement with an international fashion brand.
Notably, recycled PET fibers are becoming the main growth driver, with plans to increase their proportion to 60-70% of revenue by 2026-2027.
According to textile and garment enterprises, complying with ESG (environmental, social and governance) standards not only helps Vietnamese enterprises avoid the risk of being eliminated from the supply chain but also opens up opportunities to cooperate with major brands.
Green Vietnam 2025: from awareness to action
The Green Vietnam project was initiated by Tuoi Tre newspaper and the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance (PRO Vietnam) in 2024 to raise awareness and promote environmental protection actions.
In 2025, Green Vietnam will enter an acceleration phase, shifting its focus from raising awareness to practical action. With the theme "Promoting green consumption", the project will focus on building sustainable development models, aiming at green production and responsible consumption.
On the morning of March 1, Green Vietnam 2025 officially launched at September 23 Park (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), near Ben Thanh metro station, with many meaningful activities to promote green lifestyle and sustainable development.
