Durian season is here, businesses and gardeners are not in a hurry to finalize export contracts. Durian is playing an important role in agricultural exports.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, durian exports in May reached 450 million USD, up 107% compared to the previous month and 34% compared to the same period last year. In the first 5 months of the year, the export value of this item reached 919 million USD, up more than 74% compared to the same period last year.

It is estimated that in the first half of 2024, durian exports will earn 1.5 billion USD.

Durian continues to lead the export turnover of fruit and vegetables. Currently, durian turnover is 3.5 times higher than that of dragon fruit, the fruit that used to hold the top position in the export vegetable and fruit group.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that China is still increasing its purchase of Vietnamese durian regularly. It is estimated that in June, the amount of durian exported will reach 600 million USD, bringing the total turnover in the first 6 months of the year to 1.5 billion USD.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Vietnamese durian has the advantage of abundant output, harvested all year round, and at many times does not directly compete with Thai durian. The shipping time is fast and the price is reasonable, especially when frozen durian has better quality control.

However, some recent shipments have been warned to be contaminated with banned substances, which, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, affects the reputation of Vietnamese goods. Therefore, businesses need to increase inspections of banned substances right at the garden and packaging facility to ensure that no shipments contaminated with banned substances are exported.

The Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) recommends that localities and businesses need to closely monitor the codes of growing areas and packaging facilities to avoid purchasing goods from unlicensed places, affecting the export activities of legitimate businesses.

In Thailand, if a farmer is caught cutting young durian and is inspected by the police (at any time), the code of that growing area will be announced on a fanpage, where the Chinese consulate will be involved to handle the matter. Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy - General Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Joint Stock Company has proposed a mechanism to separate durian into an independent industry to have its own management mechanism.
