On May 24 (local time), in New York (USA), the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN) held a ceremony to celebrate the 76th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping Day and 10 years of Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping activities under the chairmanship of Ambassador, Head of the Mission Dang Hoang Giang.
After reviewing the formation, development and contributions of the UN Peacekeeping Force over the past 76 years, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, emphasized that although the Vietnamese Peacekeeping Force is still relatively young, it has made many important and outstanding contributions to international peacekeeping activities over the past 10 years, which have been highly appreciated by UN leaders as well as the authorities and people in host countries.
That result affirmed the extremely correct policy of the Party and State when deciding to send Vietnamese forces to participate in UN peacekeeping activities from June 2014, contributing to the successful implementation of the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization and diversification of international relations, enhancing the role and position of Vietnam as a responsible and active member of the UN and the international community.
With their efforts, sacrifices, bravery and creativity in carrying out their duties, units and individuals directly participating in peacekeeping activities have contributed to spreading the image and value of the Vietnam People's Armed Forces "born from the people, serving the people".
Colonel, Military Attaché Nguyen Duc Quan, on behalf of Vietnamese officers working at the UN, thanked the Ambassador and the delegation for their affection and close attention to peacekeeping work and Vietnam's participation in relevant UN activities; affirmed that they will continue to strive to successfully complete the tasks assigned by the Party and State. Senior Lieutenant Colonel Luong Truong Vinh and Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hai Ngoc, on behalf of peacekeeping officers from the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security, expressed their emotion and pride in representing Vietnam in participating in the UN "blue beret" force.
In the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, all delegates observed a minute of silence to pay tribute to the officers, soldiers and UN peacekeepers who died while on duty, including martyr Lieutenant Colonel Do Anh of the Vietnam People's Army.
According to VNA, on May 29, 1948, the United Nations officially launched the United Nations Peacekeeping Organization (UNTSO) to maintain the implementation of the armistice agreement between Israel and Arab countries. Since then, May 29 has become UN Peacekeeping Day. Over the past 75 years, more than 2 million peacekeepers and peacekeepers from 125 sending countries have served in 71 UN peacekeeping missions, of which more than 3,000 have died while on duty.
2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Vietnam deploying its forces to participate in peacekeeping missions. To date, over 800 blue beret soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army and the Vietnam People's Public Security have departed for UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, the Abyei region and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the UN headquarters, as well as participating in the European Union peacekeeping force in the Central African Republic.
