Thanh Hoa - Where elite products converge (Part 2): OCOP products affirm their brand and reach international level

Thanh Hoa is a land with many unique and typical products associated with the culture and traditions of ethnic minorities. These products not only contain cultural quintessence but also contribute to creating jobs and increasing income for the people. Through the "breath" of the OCOP Program, these indigenous and typical products have been enhanced in value, gradually affirming their brands not only in the domestic market but also gradually reaching the international level.

Affirming position on "home field"

Among thousands of high-quality products and regional specialties, OCOP products of Thanh Hoa province are always given priority to be displayed in a prominent and visible position in the system of supermarkets and stores in Thanh Hoa city. Mr. Dang The Giang, representative of Minh Anh Clean Food Supermarket, Binh Minh Urban Area (Thanh Hoa city), shared: "Previously, customers often focused on buying and using imported or joint venture products. However, due to high prices, partly due to concerns that imported goods often do not have invoices, documents, and clear origins. Moreover, when the OCOP Program was widely implemented with hundreds of agricultural products, foods, and beverages with labels, packaging, traceability, and recognized by specialized agencies, consumers gradually switched to OCOP products. From being promotional products, up to now, revenue from OCOP products has accounted for more than 20% of revenue from food products at supermarkets".

Surveys at some supermarkets, such as Co.opmart, Winmart, The Go!... show that, although not accounting for a large proportion, OCOP products in general and OCOP products of Thanh Hoa province in particular have been widely sold, becoming one of the products that consumers are interested in and choose. Notably, OCOP entities have proactively invested, changed advanced technology, applied scientific management, saved indirect costs to improve product quality, diversify designs, and increase product promotion... Thereby creating trust and pride in Vietnamese goods in general and OCOP Thanh Hoa products in particular, typically: shrimp paste and shrimp paste products of Cu Nham Fish Sauce Joint Stock Company (Quang Xuong) are present in dozens of large and small supermarkets and have 200 sales agents nationwide; Chicken eggs, squash, asparagus products of Hien Nhuan Production and Trading Company Limited (Dong Son) are available at Co.opmart Supermarket system and many stores, safe agricultural food supply chains... With the efforts of the producers, 508 OCOP products of the province, of which more than 60% are food and agricultural products, have been widely consumed in the market, forming hundreds of sustainable supply chains, contributing to increasing economic value and income for producers. At the same time, creating solid stepping stones to go further, reaching out to the export market.

Reaching out to the world

Participating in free trade agreements (FTAs), Vietnamese goods have been conquering global consumers. This is also a great opportunity for OCOP branded goods in the country in general and Thanh Hoa province in particular.

As one of the "first" OCOP products of Thanh Hoa, the cold steaming and foot bath products Moc Viet of Quang Anh Oriental Medicine Company Limited (Quang Xuong) has gradually affirmed its position and competitiveness in the market. Originally a traditional oriental medicine product, but with its superiority, superiority and effectiveness, the company has improved its quality and innovated its design to affirm its position in the oriental medicine field. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, director of the company, said: "Products made from herbs not only have health care value, but also deeply preserve knowledge and local raw materials, and more importantly, show the preservation and gratitude for natural herbs. Therefore, our products have become one of the herbal lines widely used in oriental medicine and health care facilities. Currently, the product is available in 20 provinces and cities across the country and is exported to Japan through intermediaries".

At the end of 2023, through participating in fairs and trade promotion programs in a number of provinces and cities such as Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Hanoi, etc., the bird's nest products of Thanh Hoa Bird's Nest Production and Trading Company Limited (Hau Loc) have approached partners from China. The visit and work of the partner has opened up opportunities for the first batches of OCOP products from bird's nests of the province to be exported to this potential market. "Not only did we find partners in Taiwan, we also established cooperative relationships with a number of Chinese enterprises and were highly appreciated by partners for the content and quality of the products. Realizing the "dream" of exporting products from bird's nests in particular and OCOP products "made in Thanh Hoa" is no longer a distant dream when the production entity meets international quality standards" - Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, director of the company affirmed.

As of July 2024, Thanh Hoa province has developed 508 OCOP products; of which, many OCOP products have affirmed their brand and quality, conquered the domestic market and 23 products are present in countries considered to be demanding and difficult to access markets. Typically, such as: Le Gia shrimp paste, shrimp paste of Le Gia Food and Service Trading Company Limited (Hoang Hoa) exported to Russia, Korea, Taiwan and South Africa; bamboo straws of Vibabo Company Limited (Thuong Xuan) exported to Switzerland, Sweden, the United States; handicrafts, sedge products of Viet Anh Sedge Production and Processing Export Joint Stock Company (Nga Son) exported directly and sold in 40 supermarkets in the United States; Bamboo products of BambooVina Production and Trading Company Limited (Ha Trung) have been exported to European and German markets... And, many OCOP products have become local branded gifts.

Mr. Bui Cong Anh, Deputy Head of the Office of the New Rural Development Program Coordination, said: "To affirm the brand, position and aim for export, OCOP entities need to continue to improve the "quality" of products, develop brands, trademarks, standards, quality, register codes, barcodes, product traceability stamps... Along with that, departments, branches and localities need to continue to support enterprises and cooperatives in applying technology, digital transformation in production and product marketing. At the same time, promote trade promotion activities, introduce and sell products so that OCOP products in general, traditional and typical products of the province are promoted domestically and internationally".
