According to the announced admission information, some schools use literature for the medical admission combination. Of which, Van Lang University uses literature for the D12 combination (literature, chemistry, English); Duy Tan University has the A16 combination (math, natural science, literature); Vo Truong Toan University and Tan Tao University both use literature scores for the B03 combination (math, literature, biology)...
The inclusion of literature in the three-subject combination for medical admission is strange, as most schools have previously used the traditional combination B00 (math, chemistry, biology) for this specific training program. Currently, public opinion has different views on this, including the view that there is confusion about the admission basis.
Some schools have begun to use literature in the medical entrance exam.
"Add a subject, not remove a subject"
Explaining this approach, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Principal of Duy Tan University, said that this year the school will consider a combination of math-natural science-literature for medical school.
In which, Dr. Hai said: "The natural science exam already includes 3 subjects: physics, chemistry, and biology. Therefore, this admission combination still ensures the core and stable knowledge requirements in the traditional admission subject combination of the medical industry. At the same time, this new combination is also suitable for the graduation exam and the current innovative general education program".
The vice principal added that literature was added to the admission subject group because the medical profession values humanity, compassion, sympathy, sharing, and the ability to withstand pressure in the process of treating patients. Therefore, students need to have a solid knowledge of literature to do well in the above tasks.
"A good doctor is like a mother, and literature is a person. Therefore, candidates with high literature scores (for medical majors) are favorable conditions to form humaneness and will do well in the industry," emphasized the Vice President of Duy Tan University.
In addition, according to Dr. Hai, the medical industry has the longest training period, so during the training process, the school will provide full knowledge according to the industry's output standards. Furthermore, implementing Resolution 29 on comprehensive fundamental innovation and comprehensive human resource training, it is very important to supplement an appropriate amount of input knowledge for the profession.
"Here, the school adds (specifically literature) but does not remove subjects (specifically biology), so the combination of math-natural science-literature is appropriate," Mr. Hai affirmed.

"Many people wonder but forget one thing…"
According to the method of considering transcripts, this year Van Lang University applies 4 combinations in the medical admission exam including A00 (math, physics, chemistry); B00 (math, chemistry, biology); D08 (math, biology, English) and D12 (literature, chemistry, English).
Sharing with Thanh Nien reporter, Dr. Nguyen Hung Vi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Van Lang University, said that this year the school uses the new combination D12 (literature, chemistry, English). "This combination of the school's admission is both in accordance with legal regulations and meets the necessary and sufficient conditions of this field of study," Dr. Hung Vi affirmed.
According to Dr. Vi, in terms of legal conditions, this combination meets state regulations. The Law on Higher Education allows schools to decide and be responsible for enrollment. The enrollment regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training stipulate that schools can choose subjects in the admission combination in the direction of ensuring that each combination has 1 of the 2 compulsory subjects: math or literature. Therefore, the above combination of the school ensures the compulsory subjects according to regulations.
According to Mr. Vi, the school's expansion of literature and foreign languages in this admission combination aims to meet the new requirements of society for students in this field. Today's society requires doctors to not only be good at their profession but also have a good attitude, listening skills, psychology, and the ability to share with patients and the community. "The qualities of people who are good at literature are essential for this job," said Mr. Vi.
The necessary condition, according to Dr. Vi, is the regulation to ensure the quality of the input that the Ministry of Education and Training requires for candidates applying for this major - good academic performance in grade 12 or high school graduation score of 8.0 or higher. In addition, candidates also need to achieve the admission score according to the school's regulations to be admitted and undergo a 6-year training process at the school.
In response to the concerns and worries of society about recruiting candidates who are not good at math, and enrolling them in medical school from the D12 group, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Van Lang University explained: "Many people are concerned but forget one thing, before being recruited using this group, candidates need to meet the required entrance standards, such as good academic performance in grade 12. This means that these candidates need to achieve an average score of 8.0 or higher, in which 1 of the 3 subjects of math, literature, and English must be above 8.0 and no subject must be below 6.5 points."
