Safe vegetable area from garden to city just across the river

LAO CAI With the advantage of fertile land, Thai Nien commune is forming a specialized vegetable growing area, aiming at organic vegetable production. This vegetable growing area is only a river bend away from Lao Cai city.

Safe vegetables bring in many times more income than rice

From Lao Cai City, cross the Lang Giang bridge to the vegetable growing area of Thai Nien Commune (Bao Thang District, Lao Cai). This district is building a safe vegetable production area with a scale of up to 150 hectares. This is a production area to concretize the strategy of developing commodity agriculture in the spirit of Resolution 10 of the Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee.

"My family grows several acres of squash, gourds and climbing gac. Every year, my family's income from growing safe vegetables is about 20 - 30 million VND. Because it is a safe vegetable area, I do not use chemicals for spraying and watering. For worms and fruit flies, I use bait traps to catch them instead of spraying pesticides," said Mr. Nguyen Van Doai in Bau village, Thai Nien commune.

Mr. Doai's family, as well as many other households here, have seen the effectiveness of growing safe vegetables, so recently they have boldly converted ineffective farming land to growing other crops.

Mr. Vu Van Nam in Bau village said that his family has built a trellis on an area of about 7 sao to grow vegetables and fruits, especially climbing plants. "I spent the money on making the poles, and the local government supported the trellis with 5 million VND per sao. Last season I grew melons, this season I grew cucumbers, then switched to other climbing plants such as beans, squash... depending on the season. Compared to growing rice, growing other crops brings much higher income, but it also depends on the weather and productivity," said Mr. Nam.

With the drastic participation of the Party Committee, the communal government and the villages, up to now, Thai Nien commune has had more than 200 households converting the crop structure from rice fields to growing vegetables, fruit trees...

Link to resolve output

To proactively consume products for people, currently in Thai Nien commune, cooperative groups have been formed to link production, creating a safe and effective vegetable supply chain, ensuring safe vegetables reach consumers quickly, with quality and reasonable prices.

Ms. Ly Thi Hien in Bau village, Deputy Head of the Coalition Group, said that currently, people in the Group grow many types of vegetables and fruits such as melon, squash, gourd, etc. Since switching to growing vegetables, people's income has increased significantly. Many traders have come to the vegetable area of Thai Nien commune to buy stably when the vegetable area here was formed and gradually became a brand. In addition, the Coalition Group also proactively seeks traders and contacts to buy agricultural products for people, as well as sell through social networks...

However, the organization of production and consumption of products also has certain difficulties. Some people do not clearly understand the benefits of the association. Some people only focus on immediate benefits, so they do not strictly follow the production process as well as the consumption association. The association has promoted and instructed people to use biological pesticides and to quarantine properly and for enough days to ensure food safety, and to increase the use of organic fertilizers.

Currently, farmers in Thai Nien commune are focusing on producing watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, squash, pumpkin..., and by the end of the year they will grow snow peas, flowers, winter cucumbers...

Mr. Tran Van Duy, an agricultural extension worker of Thai Nien commune, said that the commune regularly trains and guides farmers to apply new organic farming processes, for example, when planting luffa, the soil must be loosened, organic fertilizers and decomposed manure added, etc. In the care stage, old, diseased leaves must be removed and destroyed far from the garden. Luffa plants create a fragrant smell that attracts fruit flies to damage them, but no chemicals are used, only bait traps are used around the garden to attract fruit flies to stick to biological products and destroy themselves.

"In producing safe vegetables, we thoroughly remind people to ensure food safety and hygiene. Currently, food poisoning cases occur in collective cafeterias, industrial parks, and schools. Through this, we cite examples for people to grasp and know how to avoid. Safe products also create a competitive advantage in the market," Mr. Tran Van Duy emphasized.

According to Mr. Duy, the commune has found a number of cooperatives to link production and stable product consumption for the people. 4 linkage groups in 4 villages in the commune are also operating effectively. Based on the needs of the cooperative ordering party, the commune will have a plan for the people to cultivate, ensure input and output, avoid breaking the production chain...

Towards organic production, increasing value

Mr. Vu Van Hai, Vice Chairman of Thai Nien Commune People's Committee, said that implementing Resolutions 26 and 33 of the Provincial People's Council and Resolution 10 of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee, the Party Committee and People's Committee of the commune have focused on reviewing and re-evaluating the commune's agricultural production areas, focusing on converting the crop structure towards high value, organic and sustainable production, especially prioritizing riverside areas with advantages in soil and farming conditions. On the other hand, this area is close to traffic routes, convenient for production and consumption of products. Currently, Thai Nien has formed a 35ha vegetable specialized vegetable area converted from ineffective rice cultivation. Of which, the vegetable specialized safe vegetable area is about 22ha.

By 2024, the state had supported the people of the commune to build 4.5 hectares of steel frames for safe vegetable production. After converting production, households found it more effective than traditional rice cultivation. 1 hectare of vegetables earns an average of 130 - 180 million VND, many times more than rice cultivation. The consumption market is concentrated in Lao Cai city, districts and some neighboring provinces and industrial parks...

In the coming time, Thai Nien commune will continue to mobilize people in the planned neighboring areas to replicate the safe vegetable production model; coordinate with the district Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and agencies to build a safe vegetable brand, and at the same time request state agencies to help, aiming to produce vegetables that meet organic vegetable standards.

Mr. Vu Kieu Hung, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bao Thang District (Lao Cai) said that developing safe specialized vegetable growing areas in the direction of organic farming is an inevitable trend to meet the increasing demand of the market. To do this, the district has planned production areas in Thai Nien, Gia Phu communes and part of Son Hai commune. With the advantage of convenient transportation, large and fertile alluvial land along the Red River, the district orients people to cultivate vegetables, fruit trees... in the direction of high-value commodities.

“Although the support for people to produce value is not much, it has promptly encouraged people to convert ineffective land, build trellises, nets, irrigation systems, water-saving irrigation... to develop specialized vegetable growing areas towards commodities,” Mr. Vu Kieu Hung emphasized.

By 2030, Lao Cai province will maintain and develop a concentrated specialized vegetable growing area of over 2,400 hectares. Of which, the area of safe, concentrated vegetables with traceability will account for over 30% of the total cultivated area. Lao Cai province has proposed 6 main solutions, which are focusing on propaganda; land planning; production organization; science and technology; trade promotion, market expansion; investment in capacity building and state management...
