On June 9, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital, said that after a period of intensive care, two patients with botulinum poisoning have been transferred to Hau Giang General Hospital for continued treatment.

Accordingly, the two patients have begun the phase of advanced physical training and abdominal exercises. The two patients are conscious and able to communicate. The older brother can follow some simple medical commands, but his ability to breathe on his own is still limited. This patient had better muscle strength when admitted to the hospital but his condition has gradually worsened, with weak muscle strength and weak respiratory muscles.

The younger patient is the more serious patient. He is now conscious, can hear and nod his head, but cannot follow medical orders or perform simple movements. However, the two patients are still on a ventilator for a long time, and this process may require training for 2 months or more.

Currently, the vital signs of both patients are stable. Therefore, in order to prevent the risk of infection as well as facilitate family care, the two patients have been transferred to a local hospital (with the capacity to treat the remaining stages) for continued treatment.

According to MSc. Le Minh Hien, Head of the Social Work Department, Cho Ray Hospital, after learning about the circumstances of the two patients, the Social Work Department mobilized benefactors to support the two patients with 130 million VND. With a total treatment cost of more than 300 million VND, after deducting the cost paid by insurance, the amount of 130 million VND from the sponsors was used to pay for expenses not covered by insurance.

Previously, as reported by SGGP Newspaper, in the past, Ho Chi Minh City received 6 cases of botulinum poisoning due to eating bread, pork roll, and fish sauce. 3 patients were given antidotes and their health improved; 1 patient died; 2 patients (brothers) exceeded the golden period for using antidotes and after a long period of treatment were transferred to local hospitals for continued treatment.
