Traditional martial arts become the soul of Binh Dinh land and people

On January 5, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Dinh province coordinated with the Institute of Cultural Research (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) to organize an international scientific conference on protecting and promoting intangible cultural heritage and traditional martial arts of Binh Dinh.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Thanh, Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee, said that Binh Dinh traditional martial arts have existed since ancient times, since the time when our ancestors opened up new lands, and have been present in many aspects of cultural life and have been passed down to this day. Not only is it a sport activity that trains physical strength, intelligence, and spirit, but Binh Dinh traditional martial arts has also become the soul of Binh Dinh land and people, containing many morals and philosophies of life.

According to Mr. Thanh, Binh Dinh province has implemented a project to preserve and promote traditional martial arts; provide financial support to maintain, transmit, and develop typical martial arts schools and martial arts clubs; organize the compilation and introduction of traditional martial arts into teaching in schools, creating conditions for the development of physical education and sports. Thereby, searching for and discovering young talents to promptly nurture, train, and bring them into the provincial teams...

At the workshop, delegates focused on discussing and contributing ideas on scientific contents such as: Binh Dinh traditional martial arts from the perspective of intangible cultural heritage; protecting and promoting martial arts heritage - lessons from other countries; Binh Dinh traditional martial arts - local identity, transformation and integration; protecting and promoting intangible cultural heritage in the contemporary context: the case of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts and other heritages.

Opportunity to introduce the quintessence of Vietnamese culture to the world

Mr. Hoang Dao Cuong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that Vietnam is proud to have 16 intangible cultural heritages recognized by UNESCO in the list of representative intangible cultural heritages of humanity and the list of intangible cultural heritages in need of urgent safeguarding. This is not only a testament to the richness and diversity of intangible cultural heritages of ethnic communities in Vietnam, but also our strong commitment to join hands with the international community to protect heritage, contributing to the sustainable development goals of the Vietnamese Government and the United Nations.

Completing the dossier to submit to UNESCO to register Binh Dinh traditional martial arts as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

According to Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong, this workshop has many scientific and practical meanings, is an opportunity for international and domestic scientists to identify the value of intangible cultural heritage in general, Binh Dinh traditional martial arts in particular, towards completing the dossier of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts to submit to UNESCO for inclusion in the list of Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is a national task, not only to protect the heritage for current and future generations but also an opportunity to introduce the quintessence of Vietnamese culture to the world, affirming its position on the global cultural heritage map.

"We believe that scientists, martial artists and the heritage practice community will make practical contributions in both theory and practice to the orientations for protecting and promoting the value of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts, opening up opportunities for international cooperation, cultural exchange and promoting the traditional martial arts heritage," said Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong.

Binh Dinh currently has 136 martial arts masters, senior martial arts masters, grand martial arts masters, 110 martial arts master standards, 254 coaches, 4,474 martial arts students practicing regularly (not including Binh Dinh martial arts schools teaching martial arts domestically and internationally).
