Resuming flights to Russia, opening more markets to India and China
According to records, domestic airlines continuously inform about business plans, especially expanding international routes. Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet are leading this trend compared to domestic airlines in Vietnam.
May 2025 will be the peak time for Vietnam Airlines with plans to restart and launch many international routes.
Notably, the direct flight from Hanoi to Moscow (Russia) was restored after a three-year interruption due to the Russia-Ukraine war, with a frequency of two flights per week in the initial phase.
This is a strategic market, contributing to strengthening connectivity and restoring the aviation and tourism industries between the two countries.
Also in May, the airline opened two more routes to India: Hanoi - Bengaluru from May 1 and Hanoi - Hyderabad from May 7, with a frequency of 3-4 round trips/week.
Previously, Vietnam Airlines successfully operated routes to Delhi and Mumbai, serving more than 240,000 passengers on 1,600 flights.
From June 1, the Ho Chi Minh City - Bali (Indonesia) route will be put into operation with 4 round trips/week. In July, Vietnam Airlines will be the first airline in Vietnam to operate a direct flight from Hanoi to Milan, Italy, with a frequency of 3 round trips/week, and tickets have officially opened for sale.
Currently, Vietnam Airlines also maintains direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Paris (France), Frankfurt, Munich (Germany), and London (UK). According to the plan, in 2025, the airline will open 15 new international routes to countries such as Russia, Italy, Denmark, China, India, Japan, Korea, UAE, etc.
Similarly, billionaire Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao's Vietjet is also expanding its flight network to Asia, and will soon target the European market.
In March 2025, the airline will launch a series of new routes to China such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai. In the billion-population market of India, Vietjet will open additional routes from Ho Chi Minh City to Hyderabad and Bangalore.
In addition, the airline increased the frequency of flights to Japan, with 138 flights per week to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Hiroshima. From May 30, Vietjet operates the Singapore - Phu Quoc route with a frequency of 4 flights per week.
Meanwhile, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines and Pacific Airlines mainly exploit the domestic market due to difficulties in the number of aircraft.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the domestic aviation market is expected to grow by 8% in 2025. Airlines have added more than 10 new aircraft, bringing the total fleet to more than 200.
International airlines are preparing to enter Vietnam
Not only domestic airlines, international airlines are also targeting Vietnam. Ethiopian Airlines plans to operate the Addis Ababa - Hanoi route from July 10 with 4 flights/week. Meanwhile, the Russian market is also bustling again with charter flights from Irkutsk to Cam Ranh in March 2025, with plans to expand from many other cities such as Ekaterinburg, Vladivostok... with increasing frequency, expected to reach 90-100 flights/month by July 2025.
