National status

In the article on the occasion of the New Year 2025 "Innovation, creativity, acceleration, breakthrough, bringing the country into the era of national development, prosperity, civilization and prosperity", Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the positive results in 2024 will help Vietnam continue to become a bright spot in growth and be among the countries with high growth in the region and the world.

So, where is Vietnam on the global scale? Normally, we perceive the rank of a country on a regional or global scale through rankings based on criteria such as: area, population, economic size, military strength, financial capacity, cultural attractiveness, geographical and geopolitical location, level of economic freedom, level of modernity in national governance structure, as well as civilization and progress in social organization.

Although the position on international rankings cannot fully reflect, it helps us feel the position of a country, that is, national status - a political-sociological concept created by the synthesis of many factors, including quantitative parameters (objective) as well as the level of recognition by the international community (subjective). The overall perception of national status helps us visualize where a country is in regional or global structures, suggesting the level of power as well as the prestige and influence of each country towards other countries and international organizations.

In 2024, Vietnam's position has improved significantly in many international rankings. For example, in terms of the sustainable development index (SDGs), Vietnam is ranked 54/166, up 1 place compared to 2023; the economic freedom index increased 13 places, to 59/176; The global innovation index ranked 44/132 countries and territories, up 2 places compared to 2023. The national brand value of our country reached 507 billion USD, ranked 32/193, up 1 place compared to 2023. On the Asian Power Index rankings in 2024, Vietnam ranked 12th, up 1.2 points compared to 2023. Particularly impressive was the increase in Vietnam's happiness index in 2024, up 11 places, ranked 54/143.

It can be seen that Vietnam's progress on the 2024 rankings not only reflects the size and value of the economy, economic relations, capacity to solve social problems, attractiveness of foreign investment and international tourists, and diplomatic influence, but also suggests positive signals, showing the improvement of our country's position and role on the international stage.

Vietnam will continue to strive to overcome difficulties and reach new heights not only in 2025 but also in the process of realizing development goals to completely change the country's position by the middle of the 21st century. Photo: Hoang Ha

Determined to break through

The positive results in 2024 show that Vietnam is making steady progress, creating the foundation and confidence to strive to become a developing country with modern industry and high middle income by 2030; and by 2045, Vietnam will become a developed country with high income.

However, in addition to positive results, our country's development process is also facing challenges, both in the short and long term. The head of the Government has expressed his determination to make a breakthrough, demonstrated by the goal for 2025: striving to achieve a growth rate of at least 8% or higher under favorable conditions. If successful, 2025 will create a solid foundation for Vietnam to achieve double-digit growth from 2026.

On the macro level, according to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, in order to make a breakthrough, we will have to continue to address issues such as “macroeconomic stability still has potential risks, pressure on management on exchange rates, interest rates, and inflation is still high, especially in the face of adverse external impacts. The production and business situation in some areas is still difficult; market purchasing power is recovering slowly and unclearly. The implementation of some infrastructure projects is still stuck; disbursement of public investment capital has not met requirements”… “The development gap between regions, areas, and social classes has not improved much; the lives of a segment of the population are still difficult”.

Institutional issues have been identified as “bottlenecks of bottlenecks” that need to be further addressed to unlock all resources for development.

The quality of human resources is also one of the key issues that can decisively affect the ability to achieve national development goals.

The Party and State leaders have a clear view of the current socio-economic situation of our country, future goals and determination to make breakthroughs in development. With the spirit of the common good and the motto "The Party directs, the Government is unified, the National Assembly agrees, the People support, the Fatherland expects, then only discuss and do, not retreat", we believe that Vietnam will continue to make efforts to overcome difficulties, step up to new levels not only in 2025 but also in the process of realizing development goals to completely change the country's position in the middle of the 21st century.
