According to Google Doodle, chess is a board game for two players in which the strategy is to defeat the opponent's king. The game originated in 6th century India and the rules of the game began to be modernized in the 15th century.

The first international chess competition was held in 1851. Subsequent competitions evolved with new versions including timed chess and speed chess, where players can catch their opponents off guard with quick moves.

If you like chess, you can celebrate by watching the World Chess Championship, which will be held this November and December. The tournament will see the top chess players from around the world go head-to-head in Singapore in 14 classic games — each with the potential to last more than four hours. The first player to score 7.5 points will be crowned world champion.

In case of a draw, further rapid and blitz games will be held, in which each player has only 3 minutes to "checkmate" the opponent.

Google was announced this year as the Title Sponsor of the 2024 World Chess Championship. The World Chess Championship will be a 14-game match between reigning world champion Ding Liren and challenger Gukesh D to determine the World Chess Champion. The match is scheduled to take place from November 25 to December 15, 2024. This is why Google has created a Doodle that will be displayed in Singapore and select locations in Southeast Asia.
