My name is Ly Hong, 28 years old, a programmer at a multinational company. 2 months ago, I attended a reunion with my high school classmates after nearly 10 years of graduation. I thought that the party that day was a happy day. But because of a careless remark, my account was blocked by a classmate.
As planned, that day, the party was held at the most luxurious restaurant in the city. I arrived at the meeting place 30 minutes early and was led to a private room that had been booked in advance.
In the room, 6 classmates had come from people. I found a seat next to my high school best friend, Ma Fei. Since graduating, this was the first time we met again. Because after graduating, my friend went to study abroad. Until now, he just came back.
I walked towards Ma Fei. He quickly hugged me and warmly asked me about things. “Li Hong, how are you doing? By the way, where are you working? Is your income stable?” Ma Fei asked.
I hesitated and said: “I am a programmer. The salary is only about 3,000-4,000 (about 10-14 million VND)”. When he saw me reveal such an income, my friend was surprised: “I graduated from university and have been working for about 5-6 years. Why is my income so bad?”
At this point, I quickly explained: “Actually, programmers’ salaries depend on the company’s projects. Currently, I am in a small team and the company is not large, so the salary is not really high. I also hope to join a larger company to improve my income.”
Ma Phi continued to raise his eyebrows and said: “You don’t have to hide it. You and I are so close. Tell me the truth, how much do you earn each month?”
I hesitantly replied: “If I work overtime, I can earn 20,000 yuan/month (about 70 million VND)”. As soon as he heard this salary, Ma Fei’s expression changed. My friend and I felt a little embarrassed.
At that moment, the door to the room opened. Other friends came to join the party. During the meal that day, everyone was chatting and laughing happily. But there was one strange thing: Ma Phi kept avoiding me and did not want to talk to me.
After the class reunion and returning home, the next morning, I opened WeChat to see if my friends had discussed anything about yesterday's meal. I discovered that Ma Fei had blocked me from his friend list. At this point, I began to piece together yesterday's events and gradually understood why he reacted that way.
Apparently, I have been working in Beijing for many years. My monthly salary is usually around 20,000 yuan. However, I did not want to reveal the real figure, so I said it was only 3,000-4,000 yuan. Until I revealed the real figure. Ma Fei thought that I was not an honest person, deliberately pretending to be poor.
After thinking carefully, I knew that I needed to maintain this friendship, so I decided to take the initiative to call to explain. During the conversation that day, I also described my job as high pressure but the income can support myself and my family. Currently, I am actively working to accumulate money to soon buy an apartment in the city.
I also confessed to Ma Phi that the lie was only because I didn't want people to scrutinize and judge me during such meetings.
After hearing these words, my best friend also understood my intention. However, Ma Fei immediately replied: “I asked about your income not out of curiosity, nor because I wanted to borrow money. Because of our friendship, I wanted to ask if your work is still difficult. I will use my many years of relationship to help you if necessary. However, now that I have heard these things, I can completely rest assured about your ability and current work.”
After that conversation, we gradually understood each other better. Ma Phi is still the same. He is always a good friend, caring and willing to help his friends when needed.
