Recently, many locals and tourists walking on the Thuong Thanh walking street (Hue Imperial City) were upset when they discovered many graffiti marks on the Hue Ky Dai (the imperial city flagpole). The "ugly" drawings have seriously affected the image of the ancient relic.

Most of these drawings are 1.5 meters or more in height (distance from the ground), within the reach of an adult. Thanh Nien reporters recorded these images on May 17.

Witnessing these graffiti, many tourists expressed their indignation. "I feel sad because the graffiti has ruined a lot of the beauty of the relic. I hope that people passing by here should only visit and enjoy the scenery, and should not do any graffiti or modify anything of the relic," said Nguyen Van Thuong (a tourist from Thai Binh).
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong (tourist from Thai Binh) was upset when he witnessed the monument being graffitied.
Sharing the same sentiment, Ms. Vo Tuong Vy (a tourist from Phu Yen) was also indignant, saying: "The act of drawing graffiti on historical relics is extremely offensive. These places are always loved by tourists to visit, so we should act, have better awareness, and be more civilized to protect the relics."
Present at the Flag Tower, a security guard of the Hue Imperial City said that graffiti mostly occurs at night, however, the security force is small so it is very difficult to manage. These days, the force is putting up prohibition signs, reminding people and tourists not to draw graffiti or sit on the walls.
Staff of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center put up signs prohibiting graffiti and sitting on monuments.
Some newly installed works were damaged.
Many people have engraved their names on the monument.
There was also graffiti in the watchtowers.
A few bags of trash were left on the wall.
The Hue Flag Tower is located on the beautiful Upper Citadel walking route. This route was opened free of charge by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center earlier this year, attracting a large number of locals and tourists.
This unique walking route connects from Nam Xuong estuary (inside The Nhon gate, also known as Ngan gate) to Nam Thang estuary (inside Quang Duc gate, also known as Sap gate), giving visitors an interesting experience when admiring the entire ancient citadel and poetic streets of Hue.
Faced with the above situation, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center has temporarily closed the Upper Citadel area for nighttime visits from 7 p.m. every day. At the same time, it has directed the handling of some graffitied areas on the ramparts, and the restoration of the beauty of the Upper Citadel as soon as possible.
