At this time, many localities in Dak Lak are entering the final stage of the durian harvest. Currently, the weather is rainy, so many durian gardens are flooded.
Therefore, purchasing durian in rainy weather conditions is not simple. Because the green durians look beautiful and round, but inside they are easily dry and damaged... Therefore, if buyers cannot see the durian inside, they are likely to fail and lose money.
To better understand the durian purchasing situation this year, we followed a purchasing group led by Mr. Dam Van Luan, in Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak.
Mr. Luan has many years of experience in purchasing durian. However, talking about this year's harvest, Mr. Luan said that both garden owners, buyers and export enterprises are facing the risk of losing money if they cannot strictly control the quality.
To explain the above statement, Mr. Luan said that with other fruit trees, buyers can know the quality by looking at the outside and bargain to cut. But durian is not like that, the appearance such as green skin, hedgehog spines, big, round, beautiful fruit... are the necessary conditions.
The sufficient condition lies inside the durian. That is, to know the quality, you have to knock and cut down a few fruits, check the color of the flesh, the ratio of the powder and especially taste its sweetness...
Carefully tapping each durian, Mr. Luan said that choosing a quality durian is not simple. The tapper must be experienced and listen to the tapping sound to know if the fruit is ripe or not. When it makes a “bống” sound, it means the durian is ripe, otherwise, it cannot be cut yet.
After being cut from the tree, the durian fruit continues to be tapped many times for inspection and classification before being transported to the purchasing agent. Here, a professional durian tapping team of the enterprise continues to tap for a final inspection before being processed, packaged, and exported.
Mr. Luan confided that if they do not check carefully and accidentally cut durians that are not ripe enough, traders will lose big. Since the beginning of the season, many traders have suffered losses because they cut durians that are not ripe enough, and have had to transport them everywhere, even in the middle of the night, to find outlets for their defective products.
"This year the weather is erratic, not to mention the garden owner applied a different technique to potassium fertilizer, so when tapped, the durian still makes a popping sound. If the tapper is inexperienced and careless, it is very easy to cut a fruit that is not ripe enough" - Mr. Luan further analyzed.
