Technological advantage helps Israel overwhelm Hamas on the battlefield

Since the beginning of the conflict, Israel has deployed its military and technological superiority over Hamas, including thousands of airstrikes to destroy its capabilities, eliminating obstacles to clear the way for tanks and infantry to gradually tighten the siege on Gaza City.

System monitors every movement

In a row of classroom-sized buildings in the Negev desert, the Givati Brigade, Israel's main infantry force in Gaza, is using technology to carry out precision strikes with tailored weapons.

Through a series of computer screens and televisions, brigade commanders observe the real-time positions of all Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants in Gaza, and from there make decisions to move soldiers, weapons and surveillance aircraft across the battlefield like chess pieces.

According to The Wall Street Journal , the facility is home to thousands of battlefield data points from drones, fighter jets, warships, tanks and soldiers.

That data allowed the Israeli military to take control of a large swath of Hamas territory in Gaza City in less than three weeks with fewer than 50 soldiers killed. “The whole thing is a decision-making machine,” said a senior Israeli military official from the Givati Brigade at the command and control center.

On November 11, commanders at the Givati command center oversaw the evacuation of Al-Rantisi Hospital in Gaza, collating information gathered by soldiers on the ground, by drones and by intelligence officers to determine whether any militants were among the 1,000 people evacuated from the hospital.

A video of the evacuation showed some men carrying guns over their shoulders as they left the hospital amid crowds of civilians. Commanders on the ground and in the control room debated whether to eliminate the gunmen immediately or wait. Some on the ground said snipers could do the killing, but others feared it would cause panic.

Eventually, the gunmen were released. However, later that day, one of the released gunmen was killed in a drone strike while hiding in a school, suggesting that his movements had been monitored since he left the hospital.

Advanced sensors

Also in the command centers, Givati Brigade officers focused on underground fighting after infantry discovered 160 tunnel entrances, data that was used to map the tunnel network.

SpyTalk quoted a source familiar with the matter as saying that Israel has used advanced hyperspectral sensors to find hostages and hideouts of Hamas militants. The technology uses a wide electromagnetic spectrum to analyze and identify the presence of people, weapons, explosives and other objects deep underground.

The source said that Israeli UAVs equipped with these sensors can fly in the sky to collect data. The military will download the data to a nearby receiving system, either inside Israeli territory or on a warship at sea. However, the limitations of these sensors are that they cannot penetrate tunnels that are reinforced with concrete and cannot distinguish between hostages and gunmen.

On wall-mounted television screens, commanders can zoom in on high-quality images to see every street in detail. Data is constantly updated from intelligence and surveillance gathered from across the military and from soldiers on the battlefield.

When a Palestinian military target is sighted, Israeli officers turn to weapons experts sitting nearby to select the appropriate weapon, whether it is a UAV for precision strikes or a fighter jet to launch missiles or bombs to collapse entire buildings. They can directly link an officer on the field to a nearby attack helicopter.

If civilians are spotted near a target area, an intelligence officer can contact them and tell them to leave. If two units are heading straight for a group of Palestinian gunmen, the command center can direct them to move away from friendly fire. If field commanders need aerial surveillance, the commander in the control center can find and order the nearest UAV to come to their aid.
