According to Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, in charge of the Vietnam - Russia Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, Ministry of National Defense, based on the common reality of people drinking alcohol in most countries in the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced the concept of alcohol unit.

One unit of alcohol is equivalent to 10g of pure ethanol, equal to 200ml of beer; 75ml of wine (1 glass); 25ml of spirits (1 cup). Depending on the amount of alcohol consumed, it will be converted to approximately how many units of alcohol.

According to Dr. Hoang, a healthy adult will excrete 1 unit of alcohol every hour. This is an average number. Depending on the individual, such as people with weak livers or people with higher than average weight, this period of time can increase or decrease.

About 10 - 15% of alcohol will be excreted through the respiratory tract, skin, and sweat; about 85 - 90% will be processed through the liver.

A glass of beer is equivalent to about 2 units of alcohol and it takes about 2 hours for us to eliminate alcohol. However, after elimination, the body needs 2-3 hours for the alcohol in the blood to return to 0. Therefore, if you drink 1 can of beer, it will take about 5 hours for the alcohol concentration to decrease.

Studies have shown that when the alcohol concentration in the body is high, meaning when we drink a lot of alcohol, the liver's rate of alcohol elimination is faster. Conversely, when the alcohol concentration in the body is low, this rate slows down.

In particular, people need to note that even after the liver eliminates all alcohol concentration, the body still basically needs 2-3 hours to completely eliminate it.

According to Dr. Hoang, there is no completely correct answer to the question "How long does it take for the alcohol concentration to reach 0 after drinking a glass of beer?" because this depends on each person.

We can estimate the time, but these are averages, estimates. Each individual will have a different time and many factors affect the speed at which the body eliminates alcohol.

For example, if a person eats a lot and then drinks beer, 20% of the beer is absorbed in the stomach and 80% in the small intestine. When the stomach contains a lot of food, the rate of beer absorption by the stomach will be slow and the rate of alcohol excretion will also be slow.

Some people have a slower or faster metabolism, but you should be careful because some people drink the night before and the next morning the alcohol concentration in their blood and breath is still there, while others do not. People with impaired liver function or slower metabolism will take longer.

With the current regulations, if you are tested for alcohol concentration, if the alcohol concentration in your breath is less than 0.25 mg/L, you are in violation. Therefore, one glass of beer within an hour can still get you fined. If you drive, you should avoid drinking beer for about 5-6 hours before driving, even if it is just one glass.
