Application of science and technology in vegetable production

Báo Thanh HóaBáo Thanh Hóa10/05/2023

The application of science and technology (S&T) in vegetable production in the province has initially created a source of clean agricultural products, ensuring food safety and hygiene and increasing competitiveness in the market. Therefore, currently, a number of localities, units, businesses and individuals in the province have invested in building many models of clean and safe vegetable production according to VietGAP standards, hydroponic technology...

Application of science and technology in vegetable production Pumpkin growing area applying science and technology of Xuan Minh Investment and Construction Company Limited, Phuong Ngo 1 village, Hoang Luu commune (Hoang Hoa).

Visiting the pumpkin growing area of Xuan Minh Investment and Construction Company Limited in Phuong Ngo 1 village, Hoang Luu commune (Hoang Hoa), the green of the pumpkin fields seems to soften the harsh summer sun. Leading us around the pumpkin growing area, Mr. Le Van Hai, an employee of the company, said: After harvesting, the pumpkins will continue to be planted with potatoes and squash. To improve productivity and economic efficiency, the company has applied scientific and technological advances to production, especially the installation of an automatic misting irrigation system to help water disperse evenly over a large area, protect the humidity of the plants, and at the same time help increase resistance and minimize diseases developing on plants. In addition, the company also invested in a system of machinery for land preparation and harvesting.

Hoang Luu commune currently has 10 hectares of vegetables and crops following VietGAP and high technology. These are models that apply science and technology and ensure strict technical standards from land preparation to fertilization techniques. In recent years, in order to propagate and mobilize people to actively expand vegetable growing areas, apply science and technology in production, contributing to high efficiency and increasing income, the commune has promoted land accumulation and concentration; regularly coordinated with the district's agricultural sector to open training courses on science and technology application for people; promoted the construction of science and technology application models and transfer to farmers.

Talking about the application of science and technology in vegetable growing, Mr. Le Ba Duy, an expert of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoang Hoa district, shared: Up to now, the district has built a model of safe vegetable, root and fruit production following VietGAP standards with an area of 30 hectares. The main products are baby cucumbers, vegetables, beans, potatoes, squash of all kinds. To improve economic efficiency, most vegetable growers here apply modern science and technology from land preparation to harvesting. Thanks to that, the productivity and quality of vegetables, roots and fruits in the area have increased significantly. To develop and replicate high-tech vegetable production models, the district is focusing on doing a good job of land accumulation. In 2022, the district has accumulated 298 hectares of land, of which the land area for cultivation is 105 hectares, the rest is for aquaculture. At the same time, promptly implement support and incentive policies, focusing on building a close and sustainable chain of links between production, processing and product consumption, contributing to improving the quality, value and efficiency of vegetable production for farmers.

Nong Cong district currently has 37 hectares of safe vegetable cultivation concentrated in the communes of Van Hoa, Thang Long, Van Thang, Cong Liem, Truong Son... In addition, there are some areas of hydroponic vegetable cultivation applying high technology in production in the communes of Te Loi, Thang Long, Van Hoa... with a scale of 1,000 - 2,000m2/model. The production method applied by farmers is organic, focusing on soil treatment, planting seedlings in nurseries, using automatic mist nozzles, clean water storage systems for irrigation; preventing pests and diseases with biological drugs, after spraying, ensuring the isolation period before harvesting... The results show that vegetables grown according to the correct standards grow well, have high productivity, and ensure safety according to VietGAP standards. According to people's calculations, growing safe vegetables brings economic efficiency 5 to 7 times higher than growing rice. Nong Cong district has accumulated and concentrated over 2,000 hectares of land for large-scale, high-tech production, thereby gradually eliminating the fragmented, small-scale production mindset of farmers to establish agricultural production areas in the direction of goods.

According to statistics, the province has formed 97 concentrated safe vegetable production and intensive farming areas, with an area of about 13,000 hectares, with an output of about 170,754 tons/year. Of which, the area of safe vegetables applying the production process according to VietGAP standards is about 4,000 hectares. To improve productivity, product quality and reduce labor, most vegetable growers in the province are actively applying scientific and technological advances in production. However, in reality, the biggest difficulty is the planning of concentrated production areas due to the characteristics of vegetable cultivation of farmers in the province being small and fragmented, not ensuring a stable supply volume for businesses to be able to call for businesses to cooperate in investing in creating a chain of links and promoting the application of science and technology in production. Not many businesses have boldly invested in technology, especially in agricultural processing, so there has not been a chain of linkages in cultivation, product consumption... To continue developing concentrated, large-scale, high-tech vegetable production areas, all levels, sectors and localities in the province need to help farmers gradually approach the technical requirements for cultivation, investment levels, and higher management levels to gradually change their thinking and production methods. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on training high-quality human resources, building a team of qualified technical staff to receive and operate technology.
