To operate the "green" market effectively, about 150 enterprises (large emission facilities in the fields of iron, steel, cement, and thermal power production) will be included in the carbon market in the pilot phase from next June.
Director of the Department of Climate Change (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) Tang The Cuong said that since the COP26 Conference, new “rules of the game” on global trade and investment have been established. Accordingly, carbon credit markets are built and operated by countries, with the active participation of businesses.
To date, about 90 countries and territories have applied about 110 carbon pricing tools worldwide, and in 2024 alone, these carbon pricing tools controlled more than 12.8 billion tons of CO2 equivalent. The emission quota trading market alone has 36 places applying it, accounting for 19% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
In Vietnam, the business sector is also ready to participate in the carbon market very strongly. According to statistics from the early 2000s to the present, Vietnam has maintained long-term participation in carbon credit standards.
As of March 2025, Vietnam has 274 projects registered under the Clean Development Mechanism, 45 projects under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and 58 projects under the Gold Standard (GS). In total, these projects have helped reduce more than 60 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
Recently, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Department of Climate Change also conducted a survey to identify the readiness of Vietnamese enterprises to participate in the voluntary carbon market, in four key sectors, including: rice production; food and beverage production; livestock, and waste management.
Survey results show that up to 80% of enterprises in the food and beverage sector, 50% of enterprises in the livestock sector, 40% of enterprises in the waste management sector and 10% of rice production enterprises have made greenhouse gas inventories.
Many businesses have applied high emission reduction measures such as saving electricity, using renewable energy, planting trees, and industry-specific measures./.
