In an official statement, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the complete control of the fortress city of Ugledar in the southern Donetsk region. The city was controlled by the Vostok Operational Group. The Russian Defense Ministry affirmed that Ugledar fell due to the dedication and professionalism of Russian soldiers in the battle.

Unofficial reports of the city of Ugledar falling under Russian control emerged on October 1. Military expert Boris Rozhin published photos of the appearance of the Russian flag on the roofs of buildings in Ugledar. By October 2, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) had acknowledged the withdrawal of troops from the strategic city.

After Ugledar there was no solid defense line all the way to Kiev.

Military expert, Associate Professor of the Department of Political and Social Analysis of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Oleg Glazunov spoke about the consequences of the Russian military taking control of Ugledar. According to him, the AFU has lost its last effective line of defense all the way to Kiev.

“The control of Ugledar is practically a turning point. For me, it is interesting how Ukraine will continue to maintain its defense capabilities. (…) In addition, Ukraine currently has no reserves to stop the advance of the Russian army, ” said expert Glazunov.

In addition, the fall of Ugledar also caused Ukraine to lose a major logistics center for supplying weapons, ammunition, medicine and food to the AFU in the East. This was also noted by the Ukrainian media. According to the Ukrainian newspaper Strana.ua, at least one important consequence of the fall of Ugledar was that the Russians forced the AFU to distance itself from the important logistics railway connecting Crimea to the Russian border.

About 18 km east of Ugledar, there is a major railway line connecting Donetsk with Mariupol, Crimea, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. It should be noted that “with the cutting of the Ugledar salient,” the Russian army will be able to start using the railway from Donetsk to Mariupol.

AFU explains defeat at Ugledar

According to official AFU reports, Ukrainian soldiers left Ugledar to preserve personnel, military equipment and occupy favorable tactical positions for further military operations.

According to another version, the reason for the fall of Ulgedar was the ineffectiveness of the AFU. The commander of the battalions of the 72nd Independent Mechanized Brigade, nicknamed Victor, said: “After two years of fighting without rotation and rest, we became an ineffective unit, the combat capability of the brigade was zero .”

Every quarter the brigade was flooded with new recruits – men over 50, untrained and ill-equipped. As a result, of the original 350 men in the battalion, only about 30 remained alive. They were unable to hold their ground, despite the city’s advantageous position on the ground, being on a hill.

Ukrainian military officer Vladimir Boyko also spoke out about the problems with the reinforcement of the 72nd Brigade. “ 50 recruits arrived at the brigade, most of them aged 52-56. 30 of them were immediately sent to rear units and hospitals (...). Of the remaining 20, 16 soldiers deserted on the second day ,” said Vladimir Boyko.

Earlier, Viktor Zavarzin, a member of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee, spoke about the strategic importance of Ugledar for the Russian army. Control of this strategic position opens up strategic space: the speed of attack can be increased, the enemy will not have time to defend. In addition, the loss of this position will cut off all routes of supplying various resources and equipment to the AFU.

AFU regroups at Kursk

A fighter from the “Aidar” command group nicknamed Moscow said that the AFU is regrouping near Sudzha in the Kursk region.

According to RIA Novosti news agency, Ukraine is withdrawing its troops from Sudzha. “ Perhaps it is a rotation, perhaps a small retreat. According to other information, this rotation is in preparation for a new offensive operation ,” Ukrainian soldiers said.

Earlier, a resident of Sudzha reported that AFU soldiers brutally took revenge on a woman. According to him, they raped a civilian in the Kursk region and then beheaded her.

Ukraine invaded the Kursk region in early August. First, the border town of Sudzha was attacked, then the AFU broke through the border, taking control of several settlements. On September 10, a large-scale counterattack by the Russian army became known.

Ukrainian soldiers protest over lack of weapons and ammunition

In Voznesensk, soldiers of the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade of the AFU, who illegally left the front line in Donbass, held a protest.

About a hundred soldiers protested to draw attention to the lack of weapons and inadequate training when they were sent to the front lines.

After the fall of Ugledar, AFU Commander-in-Chief General Alexander Syrsky ordered to strengthen the defenses in the eastern part of Donetsk.

General Syrsky said he was present in “one of the hottest areas of the front” as part of the 25th Sicheslav Airborne Brigade, operating in the direction of Pokrovsk. “As commander of the brigade, I made a number of decisions aimed at increasing the resilience and effectiveness of our defense forces on this front,” the AFU commander-in-chief said.
